Biographical synthesis
He was born on November 26, 1876 in New York , United States He grew up on a farm near the shore of Lake Erie , as the only child in an extended family of adults, including his grandfather and great-aunt. Some described him as a lonely child who amused himself by playing games of his own invention.
Trajectory
He studied at Cornell University, where he graduated as an engineer in 1901. After university, he worked for the Buffalo Forge Company, a company that manufactured heaters, blowers and air extraction and exhaust devices, in its department of heating engineering he designed heating systems for drying wood and coffee.
Carrier soon developed a better way to measure the capacity of heating systems and was appointed director of the company’s experimental engineering department. In 1902, at the age of 25, he devised his first major invention, a system for controlling heat and humidity for Sackett-Wilhelms, a Brooklyn publishing and lithographic company. The firm had been unable to fix the colors at times due to the effects of heat and humidity on the paper and ink. Carrier received a patent for his method in 1906. He went to work hard on other refrigeration and humidity control inventions, and was eventually made head of a part of the company named the Buffalo Forge subsidiary Carrier Air Conditioning Company in his honor.
At the beginning of World War I , Buffalo Forge was forced to cut costs, and eliminated its air conditioning division. Carrier, with six colleagues, invested $ 32,600 in their own company, Carrier Engineering Corporation. Some of the company’s early clients were Madison Square Garden and the departments of the United States Senate and House of Representatives.
He installed the first domestic air conditioner in a house in Minneapolis , Minnesota in 1914. Carrier moved his company to Syracuse, New York, in the 1930s, and the company became one of the largest in New York. In 1930, it opened Tokyo Carrier in Japan , which is now the largest air conditioning market in the world.
The company pioneered the design and manufacture of large-space refrigeration machines. By increasing industrial production in the summer months, air conditioning revolutionized American life. The introduction of residential air conditioning in the 1920s helped start the great migration to the warmer parts of the south. In 2000 Carrier Corporation had sales of more than $ 8 billion and employed about 45,000 people. Carrier was the inventor of air conditioning among 80 other patents. He dominated the air conditioning market with his company Carrier Corporation between the years 1915-1948.
