Why do humans have butt hair?

Human beings have a lot of hair: on the face, on the head, in the body, in the armpits and in many other places. However, while science has managed to more or less explain the function of these hairs in various parts of the body, there is one place where the hair does not seem to be justified: the butt .

So, to try to solve the mystery, members of the SciShow science channel on YouTube began studying the issue by searching the scientific literature. As you can imagine, unfortunately there are very few studies on the subject and the only possible thing to do is theorize (by the way, why do we grow more hair on our head than on the rest of our body ?).

According to one theory, the hairs in our buttocks exist for no reason : since at the “evolutionary level” they do not cause any discomfort, there was no need to lose them even if they are of no use. The theories do not stop there: according to another point of view, the hairs on our backside serve to amplify the scent of our backside . Yes, you read that correctly.

It is probable, in fact, that the first hominids used this “perfume” as an important means of communication. The ability to be able to spread one’s “rectal odor”, in fact, would have given our ancestors the possibility of marking their territory and attracting possible companions (other than cologne!).

There is also a third theory which states that back hair is useful for reducing friction and friction as we move . By trapping sweat, the hairs prevent our bottom from suffering irritation and rashes. In short, taking into account that these theories have not been studied in detail, the reasons could also be other.
