Who Invented Algebra;10 Facts You Must Know

Who Invented Algebra. The person who invented algebra was Mohammed ibn-Musa Al-Jwarizmi, an Arab mathematician who lived between the years 780 and 850. It was thanks to him that we have computers today.

Who Invented Algebra.

Al-Jwarizmi created various equations and arithmetic operations that would give life to the current algebra involved in the programming of not only computers, but all electronic devices.

For this, it is also important to mention the British mathematician and logician George Boole who created an algebra system that bears his name.

Origin of algebra: Who really invented algebra?

Like many ancient inventions, there is no exact date of its origin, nor its official precursor. However, the oldest records discovered by historians are found in Babylonia and Egypt, approximately 4,000 years ago.

In the 16th century BC, the Egyptians had developed an algebra that solved everyday problems such as the distribution of food and materials. This was a method (known as the false position method) that executed equations of the first degree.

These equations were found in the Rhind Papyrus. There, you can see a series of problems and solutions that were given through algebraic methods.

Later, around the 2nd century BC, Chinese mathematicians also wrote down their methods in the book “Art of Mathematical Calculation.” There not only equations of the first degree were raised, but also of the second. In addition, the system of equations with two unknowns arose.

Luckily, the abacus they had created could solve those calculations, ushering in a new world of arithmetic operations.

Evolution and history of algebra

Before talking about who invented modern algebra, we must mention its precursor and this was none other than Diophantus of Alexandria, a Greek mathematician who introduced the first syllable of the word arithmos (Greek number) as an algebraic symbol.

Thanks to him, many mathematicians were inspired until Al-Jwarizmi arrived, who was a member of the House of Wisdom (a Baghdad library) and who baptized the name “algebra” through his book “Al-jabr w ´al-muqabalah» which translates to «Science of Transposition and Simplification».

The calculations set by Al-Jwarizmi gave way to today’s arithmetic problems. This is how these calculations evolved and grew until it became necessary to classify them into various types.Among these we can find elementary, abstract, linear, commutative, Boolean algebra and many more.

In fact, as we mentioned earlier, it was Boolean algebra that brought programming to life, thanks to its logical system of true and false used in electronics , mathematics, and computing .
