What to do if WhatsApp does not reach you until you open the app

It is possible that it has ever happened to you: messages arrive on WhatsApp but your phone does not notify you until you open the application and see that you have dozens of pending conversations that you have not paid attention to in hours. If the WhatsApp messages do not reach you until you open the application, there may be several causes and these are the solutions you should follow, step by step.

You will have to check that your notifications are activated, that you have permissions activated for your messages to arrive or that the application is working correctly. You can follow a series of steps and configure your phone to prevent your messages from being pending for hours. In case nothing works and the error gets worse, maybe you should contact WhatsApp to solve problems.

Turn off your phone

It may seem obvious but the first thing you can do to check that everything is fine is to turn off your phone, wait about thirty seconds and turn it on again. If something is failing, it may automatically reset itself without you doing anything else. If not, follow the solutions below.

Check Do Not Disturb Mode

Another of the first things you should do in WhatsApp and one of the most obvious is to check that you do not have the Do Not Disturb mode activated, which means that notifications are not displayed during this time. Check it from settings:

  • Go to the settings of your mobile phone
  • Access the Sound / Sounds and vibration section
  • Go to “Do not disturb”
  • Check that it is not activated

Make sure you have the permissions activated

Go to WhatsApp to check that you have all the permissions activated for the application on your mobile phone and this will ensure that this is not the problem.

  • Go to the mobile settings
  • Access the applications section
  • Choose WhatsApp
  • Open the permission section
  • Check that all are activated
  • Try again if you get the messages

Check the battery saving

If “battery saving” has been activated on your mobile, the applications will not be working unless you open it in order to avoid wasting the battery of it.

  • Open the mobile phone settings
  • Go to Battery
  • Find “Power Saving Mode”
  • Turn it off

The route may vary depending on the phone but normally you will always find it in the autonomy or battery section of your smartphone settings.

Uninstall some task manager

You may have an application that manages the tasks of your smartphone or that is responsible for saving energy. In that case, uninstall this application to prevent it from being the culprit of WhatsApp messages until you open the application. You may have blocked access to the application when it is not open and this is the reason why messages do not reach you.

  • Go to your phone settings
  • Look for the applications section
  • Choose the corresponding application
  • Click on “information”
  • Choose the uninstall option
  • Delete it from your phone and see if it’s the culprit

Check that you have an Internet connection

You may not have an internet connection on your mobile phone. The first thing you should check is that your smartphone is working properly. Open any web page from the browser to make sure you have a connection. If so, make sure and contact your operator to verify that your APN and your router are correctly configured .

Background data

WhatsApp’s “Restrict background data” or “Background data” feature prevents the application from consuming data if it is running in the background. It will only consume when you open it to check your conversations and messages. That is why you will not receive notifications of new messages. In that case, you can verify that it is disabled and that this is not the reason.

  • Go to your mobile settings
  • Open the applications section
  • Go to Applications / Application Manager
  • Choose WhatsApp
  • Go to “Data usage”
  • Check that the Background data option is activated

You may also find this option as “Restrict background data” and make sure that WhatsApp is allowed to use background data when you are not using it.

Check if notifications are turned on

We may think that the messages do not reach us until we open the messaging app but in reality what happens is that they are arriving but the notifications of them are not shown. In this case, it is worth checking that we have the notifications activated correctly.

To do this, just enter WhatsApp, from the menu button we access Settings> Notifications and check that everything is correctly activated. If so, we can also tap on the menu button within the notification settings and tap on the Reset notifications option . This could mean that if there is a problem with the notifications of the application, a reset can cause them to be shown again and not give us the feeling of not receiving messages until we open the messaging app.

Log out and clear application data

From the WhatsApp support service they recommend closing the session or deleting our account from the messaging app and deleting all the data to try to solve the error that causes us not to receive the messages until we open the application. To do this, we have to enter the phone’s Settings, go to the Accounts and Synchronization section and search for the WhatsApp app.

We touch on this option, and from the menu button or More option, we choose the Remove account option . Once this is done, the next step will be to delete all the application data on our phone. We can do this by going back to the settings of our phone and entering the Applications section. There we will have to search and select the messaging app and then click on the Delete or clear data button.

Reinstall the app

If none of this has solved the problem, then we can try to uninstall and reinstall the app. Of course, we must bear in mind that first of all it is best to make a backup so as not to lose the last messages or conversations. Once this is done, we uninstall, reinstall and tell it that we want to recover the latest backup.
