What is Reddit;how it works

Reddit is a hybrid platform : it is a social news aggregator, but it is also a large community made up of sub-communities, called subreddits, created by the users themselves around a specific topic. Reddit www.reddit.com is in the Top 5 of the most visited sites in the world . Inside, any topic is addressed.

The Reddit site is one of the main discussion centers on the network : millions of users publish new posts and comments within the Subreddits every day. This is the description provided by the site:

Reddit is a network of communities based on people’s interests. Find communities you’re interested in, and become part of an online community!

What is Reddit

Defining Reddit is not so simple, but… to make it simple, we can consider it an aggregator of social news published by the same users (called Redditers ) who are therefore creators and users of the contents on the platform. For example, if I love football and would like to address the topic with other users with the same passion as me, I will only have to enter the SPORTS community, search for the subreddit I like and register through the JOIN button.

In fact, on Reddit you will find macro topics – such as sport, fashion, TV, travel, health, fitness etc – within which users can create so-called subreddits , i.e. communities that depend on the parent category. Es COMMUNITY SPORT, SOCCER subreddit or MILAN or RONALDO subreddit.

So imagine the multitude of posts on Reddit! If you are looking for information, news, curiosities on a certain topic, on Reddit you will find everything and more.

In posts, users can publish a text or simply a link to other sites / contents. The visibility of the posts (and their success) is determined by the votes of the users themselves through simple up and down buttons.

The Reddit name stands for “Read it,” or “Read”.

Reddit App

Reddit, in addition to the web version, is also available for smartphones: the Reddit app can be downloaded for free for iOS and Android .

How Reddit works

Signing up for Reddit is free . But know that there is also a subscription – called Reddit Gold – which allows you to access the platform without advertising and with access to restricted areas.

To sign up for Reddit:

  1. Visit reddit.com;
  2. Insert your email;
  3. Choose a username and password;
  4. Browse through the topics in the side column to find the forums (subreddits) that may interest you and click on JOIN.
  5. Click on FINISHED to officially enter Reddit and start browsing.

Reddit: watchword freedom
redditor – so defines the users of Reddit – they are simultaneously creators and content users. The only rules are those imposed by the so-called Reddiquette (from etiquette, the general rules), but the basic spirit is to give maximum freedom to all those who publish the posts. Within the various communities, the same users can assume the role of moderators to moderate conversations and ban users who do not respect the rules.

What are Subreddits

Reddit is not a social and is not even used in that spirit. The use of Reddit is much closer to forums , virtual spaces that were in fashion before the advent of social networks.

The content posted on Reddit is organized into areas of interest (as if they were message boards) called subreddits .

If we had to give a definition of Subreddit it would be: an online community created on a certain topic on Reddit and where users can publish and comment posts. The name of each subreddit is preceded by an r / es. r / gaming .

On Reddit there are default subreddits (i.e. created by the site), but each user can also create new ones, but only after 30 days from his registration on the site.

At the moment the most popular subreddit is r / wallstreetbets protagonist of GameStop’s success on the stock market. But they are also very popular:

  1. r / IAmA – subreddit where users answer any questions asked by other users. This community has launched the so called AMA (Ask Me Anything, ask me anything) or the less “binding” AMAA (Ask Me Almost Anything, ask me almost anything). Over the years, many VIPs have also lent themselves to an AMA session.
  2. r / meme – subreddit dedicated to memes

On the Reddit home you can see the most popular posts written within the subreddits, as well as the hottest communities and those related to the hottest topics.

What is the difference between Reddit and Subreddit

Reddit is the www.reddit.com site, a subreddit is a specific group / community created within Reddit.

The Story of Reddit

Reddit was founded by then 22-year-old recent college graduates Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian on June 23, 2005. Thanks to a grant of over $ 100,000 received from the company Y Combinator, Reddit expanded its staff and in 2006 was bought by Condé Nast Publications, a company owner of Wired magazine. The headquarters was thus moved to San Francisco.

In 2008 Reddit became an open source project. In 2010, the premium Reddit Gold program was introduced which extends the offer compared to the free version.

In 2011 Reddit goes under Advance Publications. A few months later, the platform participates in a 12-hour voluntary blackout to protest the Stop Online Piracy Act and in the same year, 2012, joins the Internet Defense League, in defense of online freedom.

Since 2013 Reddit has accepted Bitcoin for the subscription of the Reddit Gold service , thanks to the partnership with Coinbase.
