What is MagSafe?

You may have heard that name: MagSafe . It is an Apple brand that was introduced in 2006, on a MacBook Pro power connector. The piece was connected through magnetism (giving that pulling sensation when approaching).

  • Why doesn’t Apple sell the iPhone with charger anymore?

With that, the connector was kept in place magnetically and, even if it was pulled, it would easily come off without damaging the connector or the power socket of the computer and without bumping the Macbook, dropping it from where it was.

Although very useful, MagSafe as we knew it was discontinued in all Apple product lines, between the years 2016 and 2019, and replaced by a USB-C connector. However, the name of the magnetic fitting revived on the iPhone 12 (2020).

The types of MagSafe chargers

Before talking about MagSafe on the iPhone 12 , it is worth remembering that there were two models of MagSafe. MagSafe 1 (in two formats: T or L), used between 2006 and 2012; and MagSafe 2, used from 2012 to 2015. As of 2016, new chargers came with USB-C.

You can still find MagSafe chargers for sale at the Apple store , 45 and 85 W. The difference from one to another, in addition to the shape, was a slight change in the connector pins. If you still have an old Mac and need a Magsafe, note this.
