A personal journal is your own special place to write. And it can be whatever you want it to be—a place to practice writing, a place to explore your experiences, and so on. To get started, follow these steps:

Collect the proper tools. All you really need is a notebook and a supply of your favorite pens or pencils. And there’s always a computer  that is, if you know how to keyboard. Now might be a good time to learn.

Choose a regular time to write. It could be early in the morning, late at night, or sometime in between. Also find a comfortable place to write, a place that is quiet enough for you to concentrate.

Write often. Try to write for at least 5 to 10 minutes at a time. Write as freely as you can. Just make sure that all your entries; are clearly legible.

If you regularly write for the same amount of time let’s say 10 minutes count the number o: words you produce. That number will probably increase over time—which means you are gaining fluency as a writer.

Write about things that are important to you. Here are some topics to get you started:

  • personal thoughts and feelings
  • daily happenings
  • important events
  • books you’ve read
  • ideas for stories and poems
