Europe Day is an international celebration that is observed on dates separated by two organizations, namely the European Union and the Council of Europe. The Council of Europe celebrates the date of May 5 th while the European Union celebrates it in May 9 th . The day is celebrated to celebrate an era of peace and tranquility that has been witnessed in Europe.
History behind the day of Europe
The day of Europe was established in 1964. The Council of Europe, founded in 1949, adopted the date and month of its formation as a day of celebration. However, in the following years the European Community was formed, which was later called the European Community. Despite having adopted other symbols of the Council of Europe as the flag of Europe, the European Community has decided to go with a different date for the celebrations. May 9 th was the date designated by the European Union for celebrations. This would coincide with the date on which the Schuman declaration was witnessed in 1950.
In light of the European Community’s reasons behind the celebration, it is right to refer to the Schuman declaration. Schuman was a highly respected French politician and a minister who was quite instrumental in drafting the Schuman Declaration of 1950. His idea was to unite all European countries as one economic power. According to the statement, there would be the formation of an organization known as the European Coal and Steel Community. The community foresaw the production and distribution of coal and steel for its member states, creating a supereconomy. The union was surprisingly instrumental, above all because it forged a harmonious relationship between France and Germany, which otherwise would have been unfortunate.
Events during the celebration
Europe Day is celebrated in different forms, especially in various member states, including candidate states such as Turkey. The day was created to commemorate a political event in the union chronology. Regarding this insight, the events of the day are mainly aimed at promoting and preserving the peaceful years that have been witnesses in the past years. Some countries like Warsaw organize the so-called Schuman Parade to commemorate Schuman’s contributions to the union. The day is also celebrated through the decoration of government institutions with Union flags and symbols, in order to remind citizens of its importance. Speeches are also given by leading leaders in different states.
