Use of skinner

Skinner created a problem box for learning-related use. He named it Skinner’s Box. Skinner put in this box a mesh floor, lighting, sound system, lever and food dish etc. On pressing the skinner box lever, a food dish was exposed with light or sound. Skinner locked in this box of hungry mice for the experiment.

Due to hunger, the rat was bouncing around for a while. And as soon as it bounces, the lever presses it. And with the sound of the bell, the food plate comes out. And the rat eats food. After efforts, the rat can easily obtain food by pressing the lever.

Meaning of verb contracting

Through the above uses, Skinner concluded that the repetition and scaling of behavior is guided by its consequences. The person governs the behavior. While maintaining its behavior depends on its outcome. Skinner has called this type of behavior action-oriented behavior and the process of learning such behavior as action-contracting.

Thus, it can be understood from this experiment that the rat does not get food when he presses the lever. So he does not learn the action of pressing the lever. It was stimulating the reinforcement which was in the form of food. And because of which He could get food. Skinner has described two types of behavior.

1 Respondent behavior

  1. Operant behavior

If you get the mantra of success in your life. -So read this inspiring thought

Protested behavior (Respondent behavior )

This type of behavior remains under the direct control of stimulants. And their nature is uncharacteristic, such as – blinking of a block when light comes on.

Operant behavior

These types of behavior are controlled not by stimulants but by results. And their nature is voluntary. Such as walking, legs and feet.

Use of adverb contracting theory in teaching

(1) This principle states. That good behavior has to be produced in the child also. So he should emphasize the need to reinforce it.

(2) This principle calls for emphasis on the need for children.

(3) This principle explains the importance of motivation in teaching.

(4) In mathematics, the principle can be used to memorize hills and language, spelling of opposite words and idioms etc.

(5) This principle can be used by getting desired behavior from children.

Criticism of Skinner’s theory

Although most psychologists have praised this theory. But some teaching scholars have also criticized Skinner’s theory. They have assumed that this theory is done under controlled conditions. And how can we apply this theory made in controlled conditions to natural conditions.

And they also say that there were animals or other creatures in this type of experiment. How rules based on them can be useful in social situations of learning. Likewise functional reinforcement system has failed to pay attention to the willingness, curiosity and functionality of human. One drawback to purposeful teaching is that the school does not have a full curriculum program.
