Is it a sin to live together before marriage?

Yes, it is a sin to live together before marriage. The sexual relationship was created by God to be enjoyed within marriage. If a couple wants to have sex, they must get married ( 1 Corinthians 7: 9 ).

Why get married?

Marriage was instituted by God to create strong and lasting relationships. God created marriage to be a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman, a special, secure and intimate relationship. Sexual intercourse is a very powerful thing; within a stable relationship of commitment it is very good but outside that ideal it can cause many problems ( 1 Corinthians 6:18 ).

Marriage is for:

  • Recognize responsibility– in marriage, the couple makes a public commitment. Thus, each is responsible not only to the spouse but also to society and to God. The couple recognizes that disrespect for marriage will have negative consequences not only on the relationship but also social and spiritual
  • Protect each other– legal marriage gives each party legal rights to prevent abuse
  • Giving children stability– marriage aims to create a safe environment for children, with the father and mother committed to their care

Not every marriage works. It is very important to get to know the person you are going to marry well, developing a good friendship. But living together before marriage doesn’t help. Sexual intercourse can confuse the couple and make it difficult to make the right decision. Sex does not help to get to know someone’s personality better.

Is a stable union the same as a marriage in the Bible?

No. In the Bible, there was no civil marriage and the ceremony changed over time, but every valid marriage had some kind of recognition by society. For example, when Jesus met a Samaritan woman at a well, he recognized that she was living with a man but their union was not a marriage ( John 4: 17-18 ).

Even Adam and Eve, who had no other people to witness, had God’s blessing to come together ( Genesis 1:28 ). God’s blessing and the social recognition of a valid marriage are very important in the Bible.

If you already live with someone without being married, ask God for forgiveness and try to get married as soon as possible. The wedding does not have to be a very luxurious and expensive ceremony. The important thing is to make a public commitment to be recognized as a legitimate marriage. Getting married is a testimony that the couple is committed and wants to please God.
