How to get your first ship in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, how to upgrade your ship, how to hire strong lieutenants, the basics of naval battles
In Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey , the protagonist is far from an ordinary mercenary. After several introductory missions, he will take control of the battleship Adrestia, named after the daughter of Ares and Aphrodite. Using your own ship, you can travel to any point in the game world, fulfill the conditions of numerous naval contracts, or attack other ships. Below we will study in detail the features of sea battles, the “Adrestia” upgrade and the recruitment of new crew members (lieutenants).
How to get access to “Adrestia”
You will receive your own ship after one or two hours of game time – even before the moment when you leave the starting location of Kefalonia. You will need to complete the tasks of the main storyline and wait until you receive the “Big Break” quest. During the mission, the main character will have to meet with the shipbuilder, after which – to destroy the powerful mercenary who threatens the natives. Get to the village marked on the map and fight against Cyclops and his people.
When the mercenary is finished, get to Barnabas and free him. Escort the man to a safe place where you can talk to him. You will learn that he is the captain of the “Adrestia”, who will gladly make the main character the owner of the ship. Make your way to the harbor at Sami, where the Adrestia is moored. This will allow you to leave Kefalonia and complete the first story chapter.
Travel by sea
In theory, “Adrestia” can be used to travel anywhere on the game map. However, consider the fact that each region has a recommended level of completion. If you approach a region on the ship, the recommended level of which significantly exceeds the level of your character, then be prepared for an attack from more powerful units.
There are chests scattered in the sea. Swim up to them and press the interact key to pick up loot (usually you will find wood). You can also go to places marked with “question marks” and located in coastal areas – in most of them you will learn about the location of the underwater treasure (sunken ship).
The Adrestia can be moored in the harbor. Any port is considered neutral, so no one attacks you in such places. Do not forget that your ship is “fast travel”. Select it on the world map to instantly move to the desired location.
Naval battles
The battle begins in two cases – you are attacked by pirates or you yourself are attacking enemy ships. Always check the crew level on the enemy ship before engaging in combat. If it significantly exceeds your current status, then it is best not to engage in battle, but to try to escape.
During the “Studying the Ropes” story mission, you will learn about the basics of naval combat. Initially, you will be able to attack enemy ships using bows and spears. A little later, you will unlock fire braziers, allowing you to shoot both fire arrows and throw fire spears.
Don’t limit yourself to the weapons listed above! To damage an enemy ship, you can ram it trite. To do this, first and be sure to give your team the order to dial full speed.
Do not forget that you will fight with worthy opponents who will try to fight back. The Adrestia will also take damage . You must learn to react in a timely manner to signals that an enemy ship is preparing to fire. Hold down the key to turn the boat sharply to minimize the effects of an attack.
Often times you will find yourself in situations where you have to fight with several enemy ships. Attack them in sequence, starting with the destruction of the simplest and weakest ships, which will be easier to send to the bottom.
Completion of the naval battle
Each battle at sea can end in three different ways, two of which are positive.
The first recommended method of successfully completing a battle is to split the enemy ship in two . You will need to deprive the ship of energy so that it is on the verge of destruction. After that, direct the bow of the “Adrestia” towards the enemy, order the crew to gain full speed and ram the enemy ship. The higher the movement speed, the worse the consequences for your opponent will be.
The second recommended way to win a battle is by boarding . To do this, swim up to the weakened ship and hold the corresponding key. Climb aboard the ship and kill most of the sailors. Here you can use the “Spartan Strike” skill to easily throw opponents into the water. After winning the battle, you can search the ship’s chest.
Both methods described above will allow you to maximize your loot and refresh a portion of the Adrestia’s energy bar.
The last method of victory is associated with prolonged shelling of the enemy ship with arrows and spears. As a result of such actions, the vessel will go to the bottom. Part of the prey will float to the surface, the other half will be at the bottom along with the ship. In addition, this method is not recommended for another reason: the energy supply on the Adrestia will not be restored!
Ship upgrade

In the game menu, after unlocking the “Adrestia”, the “Ship” tab will be available, which allows you to upgrade the ship at any time. All modifications can be divided into three main groups:
- Combat Arsenal– Increase Attack Speed (Rate of Fire).
- Weapon damage– everything is clear here without explanation.
- Ship and Crew Endurance– increases the defensive skills of the crew members and the ship’s health (health points).
All improvements will be useful, but two of them seem to be the most important:
- Volleys of arrows– for each subsequent level of improvement, you will receive an additional volley (for example, by pumping a skill to the third level, within a short period of time you can fire three volleys of arrows).
- Corps– for each subsequent level you will increase the strength of the ship and add one new slot for the lieutenant.
We do not recommend upgrading the ship in the early stages, as the cost of the upgrade in relation to resources, materials and gold will be prohibitively high. In addition, the first story chapters do not require you to participate in sea battles.
How to recruit new crew members (lieutenants)?
Lieutenants are members of the ship’s crew that you must place in active slots on board the Adrestia. At the beginning of the game, only one slot will be available, but after a while you can increase their number to four. Additional slots will be unlocked by modifying the ship’s hull (as described above).
Only one lieutenant can be placed in each slot . We are talking about the characters you hired who agreed to continue the journey with the main character. The first lieutenant will be obtained during the passage of the story mission, while the rest will have to be found on your own. Each randomly encountered character will have a unique set of characteristics that, to a certain extent, affect the power of your ship. For example, one lieutenant can increase the rate of fire of the ship, another – the damage or stamina.
There are two main ways to get new crew members:
- Some characters will join the team after completing certain quests (usually side quests). After that, it will be enough to invite them.
- The second option is more difficult, but it will allow you to get experienced lieutenants. Stun your opponent. When he faints, move closer and offer a job.
In theory, the game allows you to hire any character you meet, but before doing this, use the help of the eagle and scan the heroes. Each enemy in scan mode is highlighted with a different color indicating their skill level. Try to look for ” gold ” or ” purple ” characters. The “golden” characters are usually fortress commanders or mercenaries hired to kill the protagonist.
TIP : “Purple” and “Gold” opponents are very strong, so they freely resist the standard stun when attacking from behind. This will not be enough to neutralize such a character, so be sure to unlock the Spartan Strike skill. Fortunately, it is in the first level group!
Attack the enemy in the usual way, using a bow, “white” weapon, and so on. Weaken it, leaving a minimum supply of health points. Then use Spartan Strike, which will stun and knock the enemy target down. Now go to the defeated character and press the recruit key
