The creation of this term is attributed to the Catholic Church, specifically to an institution dedicated to spreading the word of Jesus Christ and the Gospel, called the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith (Latin: “ Sacra Congregatio de Propaganda Fide” ), created by Pope Gregory in the 17th century. In a strict sense, propaganda (“things to be propagated”) is that information that is distributed or handed out for the express purpose of influencing public opinion .
