Geographic location

It is located behind the Rambla Sur , on Gonzálo Ramírez street , in the Palermo neighborhood . Originally, this cemetery was outside the urban area of Montevideo , to avoid the risk of an epidemic. However, with the growth of the city, it ended up being completely surrounded by the metropolis, a process that culminated in the construction of the Rambla on which its rear walls are erected.

History

It was founded in 1835 under the presidency of Manuel Oribe who entrusted its layout to the architect Carlos Zucchi to replace the old cemetery. The access roundabout was designed by the architect and sculptor from Ticinese Bernardo Poncini [1] .

It was one of the first necropolises in the country, at a time when burials were still practiced by the Catholic Church. In its facilities you can see sculptures and pantheons by renowned artists, such as José Belloni and José Luis Zorrilla de San Martín [2] .
