History

The first olive samples that have been found in the Ampurdan date from the end of the Bronze Age. But the cultivation of the olive tree and the production of oil are attributed to the Greeks , who arrived by sea in the 6th century BC and founded the colonies of Empúries and Rosas (Gerona) , which would soon become dynamic commercial enclaves. Later, the Romans maintained the crops and the Order of Saint Benedict monks consolidated them, until reaching the current situation, with an extension of more than two thousand hectares of olive trees and a production of high quality oils.

Geography

The municipalities that make up the geographical area of the PDO Oil of l’Empordà are within the Alto and Bajo Ampurdan counties , as well as some neighboring municipalities in the Gironès counties ( Viladesens , Sant Jordi Desvalls , Flaçà , Madremanya and Llagostera ) and the Pla de l’Estany ( Crespià , Esponellà and Vilademuls ).

The cultivation area is concentrated on land with poor soils: the Sierra de la Albera and the Sierra de Rodes to the north; the Montgrí and Las Gavarres massifs to the south. Mountainous substrates that configure a characteristic geology, with granites , slates and clays. The privileged geographical location of Empordà, straddling the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrenees , makes the climate combine mild winters, not too hot summers and the inevitable Tramuntana. All this helps to configure the marked character of l’Empordà oil .

Production

The olive growing area of l’Empordà is 2,632 ha, of which 2,325 are in Alt Empordà and about 5% are integrated production. It is a traditional crop – it is one of the oldest olive groves in Catalonia – which makes up a significant part of its landscape and has been part of the life of its farmers since time immemorial. This area represents 80% of the total area of the Girona region. The annual production is about 800,000 kilos of oil and 4.5 million kilos of olives.

Varieties

The quality and uniqueness of the PDO Oil de l’Empordà are guaranteed by the specific olive varieties of the area: argudell, corivell and verdal (Cadaqués law); and at the end of the 20th century the arbequina variety was introduced .

characteristics

The oil Emporda has a clear, clean and transparent appearance. The taste and the sensations it gives off change according to the fruit that has produced it. The argudell and corivell varieties have a delicate balance between sweet and bitter, while the verdal variety (Cadaqués law) gives rise to a fruity, mature oil with a certain degree of chopping.

These varieties of olives, give rise to extra virgin olive oils, limpid, transparent, without veils or turbidesa if filtered is marketed. They are very palatable, very tasty and aromatic oils: slightly astringent with a bitterness and one itching in balance with the fruit and a remarkable aromatic complexity in which aromas reminiscent of almond , tomato , anisats , fennel are appreciated. and the artichoke. They have a maximum acidity of 0.8º and a maximum peroxide value of 20.
