Origin of Beach Volleyball

Born as a variation of the traditional indoor volleyball, the official origin of Beach Volleyball was in the city of Santa Monica, in California, United States, in the 1920s. Although there are records of this same sport in other countries, Santa Monica received this distinction because it was also the first city to organize an exclusive tournament of the modality.

Although it became one of the most popular sports in the world, it was only in the 1970s that Beach Volleyball achieved the status of a professional sport. The first officially professional tournament of the sport took place exactly in the sands of Santa Monica, in those same years. From then on, the sport further increased its number of fans and spectators.

It was in 1996 when, finally, Beach Volleyball received the prestige of becoming an Olympic sport, debuting at the Atlanta Olympic Games. The first Olympic champions of the modality were: in men, the Americans Kent Steffes and Karch Kiraly; in feminine, the Brazilian couple Jacqueline Silva and Sandra Pires.

Main rules

The basic rules of Beach Volleyball are the same as in indoor volleyball: two teams separated by a net, whose objective is to place the ball on the floor of the opponent’s court. The dynamics of the game are also the same: each team can touch the ball a maximum of three before passing it to the opposing team.

Team

Unlike traditional volleyball, Beach Volleyball teams are smaller, made up of only two players. There are no substitutions or substitute players.

Court

Due to the small number of players, the beach court is slightly smaller than the normal court. Its dimensions are 16 m long by 8 m wide. The net has different heights for each category: in the male it measures 2.43 m and in the female 2.24 m.

Sets and score

The game is played to the best of three sets, that is, the pair that wins two sets wins the match. Each set lasts 21 points, provided there is a minimum difference of two points over the opposing pair. If a third tiebreaker set is necessary, called a tie-break , it will be shorter, up to 15 points.
