biographical synthesis

He was born on July 1 , 1902 in Barcelona , Spain . From a very young age he was interested in the work of Antoni Gaudí , and his uncle, the painter Josep Maria Sert . He studies at the Higher Technical School of Architecture in Barcelona. He travels to Paris in 1927 where he acquires Le Corbusier ‘s publications . With Architect Diploma. In 1929 he moved to Paris and worked in Le Corbusier’s workshop. He attends CIAM II in Frankfurt. In 1939 , at the end of the Spanish Civil War, he was declared unqualified to exercise his profession. He moves to the US and resides inNew York .

Trajectory

In 1930 he began to design his first buildings, which reflect an unmistakable Mediterranean style through their white color and profusion of light. At the same time, these buildings lack ornaments and other unnecessary elements, with which Sert created buildings of a rationalist nature for the first time in Spain. The Tuberculosis Dispensary and the Housing Building on Muntaner Street belong to this period, both in Barcelona. Another notable building by the same author, much less important but closer to its place of origin, is the CEIP Los Conventos de Martorell, built before the Spanish civil war, but due to this fact he did not finish it and for this reason he is not recorded as the architect of said building.

Along with other architects, Sert was a founding member of GATEPAC (Group of Spanish Artists and Technicians for the Progress of Contemporary Architecture) to be the Spanish branch of the International Congress of Modern Architecture—, which was established in Zaragoza in 1930 at the initiative of Fernando García Mercadal to promote the rationalist style in Spanish architecture and that in Catalonia used the denomination of GATCPAC, “Grup d’Arquitectes i Tècnics Catalans pel Progrés de l’Arquitectura Contemporànea”. GATEPAC had, in addition to the eastern or Catalan headquarters, the north and the central, which referred respectively to the Basque and Madrid groups. He also attended the initial meetings of CIAM, the international conferences on modern architecture,in Frankfurt , one of those who would end up being its president after Le Corbusier. At the end of the Civil War, he was retaliated against by the Franco government , and disqualified from practicing architecture, after which, in 1941 , he went into exile in the United States , where he created, together with other architects, an architecture and urban planning studio, which he called Town Planning Associates. The studio carried out several urban projects, especially in [[[Latin America]], such as the pilot plan for Havana .

After being a professor of architecture at Yale University for a year , Sert was appointed dean of the Harvard University School of Design in 1953 , a position he held until 1969 . In 1955 he founded a new architectural firm with several partners, which carried out projects throughout the United States , both commercial, residential, institutional and office. Around the university Sert designed several buildings that are part of his representative works and in which the Mediterranean atmosphere that Sert preserved in his designs throughout his professional life is reflected.
