Trajectory

Inventor of the Vaqlan system of removable wooden constructions in 1933 , in the first five years of the 1930s, he collaborated with Goico Aguirre , Jerónimo Junquera and Federico García Lorca in the design and construction of the La Barraca stages for the performances in the Fontan Square . Around the same time, and as an architect, he participated in the restoration of the Sobrado Monastery and carried out the project for the Santiago de Compostela Food Market .

In the 1950s, he first held the position of deputy director at the Spanish School in Rome , of which he would become director. In this same decade he is in charge of designing various monumental spaces such as the monument to Columbus in the Huelva estuary, or the Discovery Square in Madrid. Between 1954 and 1967 he made the façade of the Colegio América in Oviedo , the Cantábrico Hydroelectric building and the Salime and Proaza power plants.

Before a painter than an architect , his work has a restorative aspect in cities such as Santiago de Compostela, where he restored the University library, the Clock Tower of the Cathedral and the Fonseca Palace between 1940 and 1950 , and Segovia. Starting in 1980 , his pictorial works underwent a change in style, ceasing to have naturalist references to address more urban landscapes. He was in charge of the internal decoration of various institutional and private buildings, such as the congress hall of the Hotel Reconquista .

As a sculptor , the effigy of Policarpo Herrero ( 1929 ), the sculpture of General Arce and the monument to Thiebaut ( 1946 ) are particularly noteworthy, although it is said that his most important sculptural work is the reliefs of the Grandes de Salime Hydroelectric Power Plant, belonging to Hidroeléctrica del Cantábrico, in which the operation of the plant and its construction are represented.

From 1969 he was a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and of the Italian National Academy of San Luca, which dates from the 15th century and was included among Spanish members Velázquez, Ribera, Picasso , Dalí and Miró. A member of RIDEA since 1970 , he was named Favorite Son of Asturias in 1980 and a silver medal from the Principality of Asturias in 1989 .

The Oviedo City Council unanimously approved on March 15, 1988 to grant the name of Joaquín Vaquero Palacios to the street located in Pumarín, between those of Fernando Vela and Comandante Bruzo. On May 29, 1992 , the municipal plenary approved the placing of a plaque on the architect’s birthplace, which was discovered by his son, also a painter Joaquín Vaquero Turcios . At the beginning of August 1992 he won the gold medal for creation at the First Artistic Fair of Santander. On August 27 of this same year he was awarded the “Asturias” Prize for 1992 ., awarded for the artistic quality and aesthetic dimension of his work.
