Joslin “Josh” McDowell is an American evangelical Christian apologist, evangelist, and writer. He has written about 77 books.
McDowell was born in Union City, Michigan in 1939 under the name Joslin. [1] He was one of the five children of Wilmot McDowell. According to his own testimony, his father was an alcoholic and a batterer, so during his adolescence he had self-esteem problems.
He enlisted in the Air National Guard, where he received basic training and was assigned to aircraft mechanical maintenance, but was relieved of service after suffering an accident.
Initially he planned to study law to pursue a career in politics. He began his studies at Kellogg College High School in Michigan. According to McDowell, at that time he was an agnostic and decided to prepare a thesis that would examine the historical evidence for the Christian faith in order to refute it. However, he ended up converting to Christianity after – as he claims – the evidence found supported the historicity of Christianity rather than refuting it. He later earned a Bachelor of Arts from Wheaton College in Illinois. He then studied at Biola University Talbot Theological Seminary in La Mirada, California, published a thesis examining the theology of Jehovah’s Witnesses, and earned a Master of Divinity degree.
In 1982 McDowell was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by the Simon Greenleaf School of Law, in recognition of his ministry and work as a writer.
