Developing

The Legacy saga was originally planned as a trilogy. In October 2007, Paolini gave an online “lecture” where he reported that the third book had become so long that he found it convenient to divide it into two volumes. He later revealed that the book would be longer than Eldest .

Since March 2005 , Paolini began to reveal details of Brisingr. He suggested that this book would reveal whether Saphira would find a mate and that the Varden would possibly disadvantage Nasuada as their leader. He also said that the book would explain how Thorn, Murtagh’s dragon grew in physical proportions to rival Saphira despite her age, as well as the nature of the spirits invoked by the sorcerers; He also said that the rest of the saga would reveal details about Arya’s past, as well as the dwarf culture and Brom’s lover, referred to by Angela above.

In March 2008 Paolini posted a spoiler on Brisingr on the Legacy website , revealing that Eragon would meet a god in the book. A second spoiler was revealed a couple of months later, in May of the same year, revealing that Eragon would face a “terrifying new enemy who liked to laugh a lot, but not in a good way.” Finally, another couple of months later, in July, a third spoiler revealed that one of the characters would get pregnant.

An excerpt from Brisingr was published in the deluxe version of Eldest , entitled “Luz y sombra” (titled “The Attack on Helgrind” in the final published version of the book) and was later also published on alagaesia.com, where it was advertised as a fragment of the third chapter of the third book of the (then) trilogy The Legacy. The fragment recounted Eragon and Roran’s journey to Helgrind in their attempt to rescue Katrina from the Ra’zac lair. This fragment differs in minute details from the final version that was published in the book.

Brisingr was published in the United States , Canada , Australia , New Zealand , Singapore, and England on September 20 , 2008 , with subsequent releases in other countries. Over 2,500 midnight parties were held for the Brisingr launch on September 20.

Title and Cover

Paolini said that Brisingr was one of the first words he came up with for the title of this book and it always seemed perfect to him, since, being the first word in the ancient language that Eragon learned, this was particularly significant to him. Brisingr is the ancient language word for “fire”, used to invoke and control fire by practitioners of magic in the series, and ends up being the name of Eragon’s sword. Paolini also revealed that this book, as well as the fourth, would have a subtitle: The Seven Promises of Eragon Shadow Assassin and Saphira Shining Scales. He also added that he already knows what the subtitle of the fourth book will be, although he has not yet decided on the name of it.

Although Paolini had confirmed long ago that the cover of the third book would be emerald green with a dragon of the same color facing to the right, after dividing the third book into two parts, the cover of the third book became black with the image of the golden dragon Glaedr; This cover, drawn by John Jude Palencar, was previously published with the special edition of Eragon and was used for the English version of Brisingr, while for the Spanish version it was a variant of the same Glaedr, in a different position. Paolini said that the green cover will be the fourth book.

Argument

Eragon, Saphira and Roran rescue his girlfriend, Katrina, who is a prisoner in Helgrind, the lair of the Ra’zac. Eragon meets with Sloan, Katrina’s father, who has lost his sight and is also a prisoner in Helgrind. Eragon tells no one that Sloan is alive and, after rescuing Katrina, has Saphira and Roran take her away, while he stays in Helgrind to exterminate the Ra’zac and secretly decide what to do with Sloan, to who finally decides to send Ellesméra to live with the elves. Arya finds Eragon when he travels through the Empire back to Surda with the Varden and accompanies him the rest of the way.

Meanwhile, Nasuada is forced to pass a terrible test to prove that she deserves to continue leading the Varden. Roran is summoned to perform missions for the Varden and demonstrates superhuman courage and strength. When Eragon returns, he busies himself with countering Elva’s spell. Murtagh and Espina attack the Varden shortly after Eragon’s return, and he and Saphira manage to defeat them with the help of bodyguard elves sent by Islanzadí.

The dwarves have to choose their new king and Nasuada decides to send Eragon to try to persuade the chosen one to support the Vardena cause. Due to this, Eragon is separated from Saphira again to try to deceive the Empire and avoid an attack from Murtagh and Espina while Eragon is away.

After hard and long meetings, an assassination attempt, arguments and trials, the one chosen to lead the dwarves is Orik. Saphira and Eragon meet for the coronation ceremony where the spirit of one of the dwarf gods appears. Saphira recomposes Isidar Mithrim (the star sapphire) thus fulfilling her promise to the dwarves.

Eragon then travels to Ellesméra to continue his training with Oromis and Glaedr. Oromis and Glaedr reveal to Eragon that their father is not Morzan, but Brom. Glaedr also reveals the source of Galbatorix’s power: Galbatorix controls hundreds of eldunarí (“heart of hearts” in the ancient language), jewel-like organs that possess the consciousness of dragons until they are destroyed, even after their physical death. . Although a dragon does not exist physically through its eldunarí, it can channel its energy to the owner of the eldunarí and transmit its knowledge and wisdom. Eragon takes advantage of his stay in Ellesméra to visit the blacksmith Rhunön, who helps him to forge a new sword, to which he gives the name of Brisingr, using the legendary bright steel, the legendary metal with which the swords of the ancient Riders were forged. Curiously, it is intuited that Brisingr is the true name of the sword, since every time Eragon pronounces his name, it is covered in flames. Before Eragon and Saphira return to the Varden, Oromis and Glaedr explain that the time has come to leave their anonymity and reveal their existence to the Empire, and they deliver Glaedr’s Eldunari to Eragon and Saphira.

Meanwhile, after marrying Katrina, Roran continues to fight and help fight the Imperial armies, when it is revealed that Katrina is pregnant. Roran helps the Varden to fight various convoys, and is given authority over a number of men, but in one of the Surdan cities the superior commander’s foolish and unconscious plan nearly kills all the soldiers, so Roran disobeys his orders. orders and takes command, thus managing to save almost the entire army. Despite saving the mission and killing nearly 200 soldiers alone, Roran is relieved of his duties and charged with insubordination, for which he is punished by Nasuada upon his return to the Varden. Nasuada promotes Roran to commander, and sends him to besiege the city of Feinster.

Eragon and Saphira return from Ellesméra to join the Varden at Feinster, where the Varden attempt to besiege Lady Lorana, the leader of the city. Eragon and Arya witness the creation of a Shadow, and Eragon, through Glaedr’s Eldunarí, sees Oromis and Glaedr battle Murtagh and Thorn in Gil’ead, both of whom are no match for the veteran dragon and his Rider. However, Galbatorix meddles in combat, controlling Murtagh’s body and succeeding in killing Oromis and Glaedr.

While Eragon witnesses the death of his master through Glaedr’s eldunarí, the new Shadow tries to assassinate Arya, who after minor complications and with the help of Eragon pierces the heart of his enemy.

Eragon and Saphira realize that they are Alagaësia’s last free Rider and dragon and that it is their responsibility to overthrow Galbatorix now that they know his weakness. Eragon talks to Nasuada about Oromis and Glaedr, and she informs Eragon that the Varden’s plan is to travel to Belatona , Dras-Leona, and finally Urû’baen , where they plan to kill Galbatorix .

His parents are Kenneth Paolini and Talita Hodgkinson and he has a little sister, Angela. He often wrote short stories and poems trying to put his thoughts into words. He visited the library frequently and read a lot. Eragon’s argument began as a teenage boy’s daydream.

Paolini’s love for the magic of stories led him to create a novel that would make him enjoy while he read it. At the age of nineteen he was already an internationally recognized author, for the first volume of The Legacy.

Inspiration for the mythical kingdom of Alagaësia came from the landscapes of Montana. He started thinking about writing a trilogy, but due to the length of the third book Brisingr, he decided to make a fourth book and turn the saga into The Cycle, The Legacy. One day, when Christopher was visiting Anchorage ( Alaska ) with his family , they visited a public library and a detective book fell into their hands … “There was something wonderful and magical about that moment. Everything he read finally made sense.

I could see images and colors, I could smell things and touch them. It was almost like watching a movie. ” That was the moment when he realized that reading is more vivid for an author than for a conventional reader.
