Specification

IPX is an old Novell network protocol from the NetWare operating system . It is used to transmit data over the network, including the destination address in each packet. It is a fast datagram protocol geared towards connectionless communications.

features

  • IPX is a Network Layer protocol (level 3 of the OSI model ).
  • It is packet oriented and connectionless communication oriented (it does not require a connection to be established before packets are sent to their destination).
  • It is used as a messenger for the SPX protocol , since by itself it lacks reliability during packet transport.
  • The header of IPX packets is made up of 30 bytes, and the data that together with the header cannot exceed 1518 bytes.

IPX addressing system

Three basic components are used to identify a process on the network:

  • Network address, which identifies the network to which it belongs.
  • Node number indicating the device connected to the network.
  • Socket number indicating the process on the node.
