How to use an impact wrench

Using an impact wrench can make that mechanic job even faster. If you change a tire or rebuild an engine, a handy impact wrench helps you get the job done better. Using it every day can tire your body, but it allows you to focus on work and not worry about sore arms at the end of the day.

Adjust the air compressor regulator to the range of 90 to 100 PSI or pounds per square inch. Most impact wrenches operate at their most efficient in this range. The air compressor must be plugged into the outlet and ready to run.

Connect the air hose to the outlet of the air compressor and stretch it. Make sure there are no kinks in the hose, as the impact wrench requires a constant, unrestricted flow of air to operate properly.

Put four to five drops of air tool oil into the air inlet of the impact wrench. This should be done every time the key is used. There are small bearings at the ends of the rotating turbine that rotate the socket end of the key. Without proper lubrication, bearings will soon fail.

Plug the air hose into the air inlet of the impact wrench. Squeeze the trigger to test the direction of the key before using it. A small button can be moved just above the trigger on the hand grip to the left or right, or in or out, for the forward or reverse direction of the end of the socket.

Test the speed or torque adjustment screw on the impact wrench. Most wrenches will have a torque setting that applies more air to the turbine driver that rotates the socket end of the wrench. This setting is generally noted with the numbers 1 through 10, with 1 being the lowest value.

Warnings

Use only rated impact or torque connectors when removing bolts. Others can break due to the high torque of an impact wrench.

Always wear safety glasses when using a power or pneumatic tool.
