How can I get into the Linux Distributor Tester?

DistroTest is a website that has a considerable list of Linux distributions. Thus, we can use one of them without having to download or install anything on our computers. To achieve this, this tester offers virtualization tools in a simple interface.

Using DistroTest

You can test any Linux distribution using DistroTest. To do this, open the DistroTest website and locate the distro you wish to test on your PC. All distributions provided by this portal are organized alphabetically for easy and quick location.

Click on the distribution of your choice and immediately, you will see a series of available options. We recommend you access ‘Details’ to know the basic requirements that your team must have in order to test the distro successfully . Finally, press ‘Start’ to start testing the distribution.

It is important to mention that once you start the test, you have a time period of 30 minutes. When the test is over you can request 15 more minutes if you wish. Every time you start a particular test, the same username and password are requested. The response speed of the operating system will depend on the bandwidth of your network.

With OnWorks

There is an alternative to try out Linux distributions in your PC’s browser. In this regard, you can access the Onworks website where you will find a list of distros that have some programs installed by default. It should be noted that performance may vary due to the fact that the simulation is performed live.

To test a distribution with OnWorks, locate and select the distro of your choice and press the ‘Enter’ button. Wait about 25 seconds and start using the operating system from your PC . Make sure you access the default applications like GIMP, Firefox, LibreOffice, among others.

Files can be downloaded using a file manager provided by OnWorks. It is important to mention that if five minutes of inactivity elapse, OnWorks closes the session you have opened. When starting the test, enter the user root and the password 123456 to open the desktop.

How can I test Linux on my PC from a CD or DVD drive?

It is possible to try Linux on PC from a CD or DVD drive . To do this, you will need a Live CD or Live DVD. This is a distribution of a system that is stored on a CD or DVD without the need to install anything. Instead, the ‘Live Distro’ uses the hard drive, virtual memory and its own media as a file system.

Preparation and distribution of the unit

The preparation and distribution of the unit is a simple process. First, download the Linux distribution package you want to test and you’ll get an ISO image. Next, you will need to download and install the ‘UNetbootin’ tool . This lightweight application will allow you to create a test disc easily and efficiently.

Test Linux Installation

Insert the blank CD or DVD and open UNetbootin and select the Linux distribution you are going to test. Also, it is necessary that you specify the version of said distribution, press the button with three points and look for the ISO image that you downloaded in the previous step. Choose the CD or DVD drive and click the ‘OK’ button.

When the creation of the Live CD or DVD is finished, you will need to restart your PC. Access the Boot Menu to open the disk with the Linux distribution . Also, you can choose to enter and modify  the boot BIOS from the ‘Boot’ tab. Therefore, you will open the Linux distribution in order to test it as long as necessary.

Another option that can be useful is to use VirtualBox on your Windows or MacOS PC . By making a virtual machine from this platform, you will be able to install Linux from a CD or DVD drive. In addition, it is possible to repartition the drive to define the virtual space that the distro will occupy and apply other settings.
