How to schedule disk cleanup in Windows 10 and 11

Both Windows 10 and Windows 11 have a storage management feature called Storage Sense. It is a great storage management feature that is offered for free. With Storage Sense, you can quickly understand what’s taking up space on your storage drives.

The Storage Sense feature resides in the Windows 11 Settings app and must be configured manually. Today we are bringing you a great feature of Windows 11 known as “User Content Auto Cleanup”. So, let’s learn about automatic user content cleanup  and how to enable it.

What is automatic user content cleanup in Storage Sense?

Automatic user content cleanup is a feature that forces Storage Sense to run when there is not enough disk space. The part automatically performs storage detection and cleanup to help keep your system running at its best.

After you enable automatic cleanup of user content, you must configure the cleanup schedule for  file detection . It would be helpful to choose when Windows 11 should run Storage Sense, when to delete files stored in the Recycle Bin, and when to delete files stored in the Downloads folder.

Enable automatic cleanup of user content

In this method, we will know how to enable  user auto clean content in Windows 11 . Follow some of the simple steps we have shared below.

 

  1. First, click the Windows 11 Start button and select Settings.
  2. In the Settings app, click the Systemtab  in the left panel.
  3. Now on the right, scroll down and click on Storage.
  4. On the Storage screen, scroll down and click Storage Sense or Storage Sense.
  5. On the next screen, toggle the toggle to Onso you can enable ‘ User Content Auto Cleanup ‘.
  6. Here we go! Storage Sense will now run whenever it detects insufficient disk space on your device. This will allow automatic cleaning of user content on your Windows 11 computer, with Windows 10 it is the same procedure.

Configure Storage Sense

This method will teach us how to configure cleaning schedules in the storage sense. Follow some of the simple steps we have shared below.

  1. First, click the Windows 11 Start button and select the Settingsapp .
  2. Next, click the Systemtab  on the left panel.
  3. On the right side, scroll down and click Storage.
  4. Now scroll down and click on the Storage Senseoption .
  5. On the next screen, scroll down to the Set up cleaning schedules section. Select when you want Windows 11 to perform storage detection from thefirst dropdown menu.
  6. In the second dropdown menu, select when you want Storage Sense to delete files stored in the Recycle Bin .
  7. Now, select when Storage Sense needs to delete files in the Downloads folderfrom the third dropdown menu.
  8. If you want to free up space now, click the Run storage detection nowbutton  at the bottom of the screen.

Here are the few simple steps to free up storage space on your new Windows 11 computer/laptop . You must configure Storage sense to run automatically.
