How to reset the lock code of our iPhone

The unlock code of our iPhone is the one that gives us access to the phone. It might seem that it is replaced by Face ID or Touch ID, but the truth is that these methods depend directly on the code and request it on different occasions. A code, therefore, really important that we have to be able to reset in some circumstance .

A simple process, as long as we know the current code

Once we consider resetting or changing the lock code of our iPhone, two scenarios can occur: that we know the current code or that we do not know it . In the first case, changing the lock code is really easy, the steps to follow are the following:

  1. We unlock our iPhone using the current code, Face ID or Touch ID.
  2. We open the Settingsapp .
  3. We entered Codeor Touch ID and code or Face ID and code .
  4. We enter the unlock code of our iPhone.
  5. We touch on Change code.
  6. We enter the current code.
  7. Click on Next.
  8. We enter the new code, if necessary click on Code Optionsto create an alphanumeric one.
  9. We enter the new code a second time.

Clever. With this we will have changed the lock code of our iPhone. A process, as we can see, that lasts just a few minutes . Now, however, the situation changes a lot if we don’t know the current code.

A longer process if we do not know it and impossible if the iPhone is not ours

Here we must make a clarification before continuing. The lock code of an iPhone is not the only element that protects the use of the phone. If the phone to which we are trying to change the code is not ours, even if we restore the code, we will find the activation lock (which reminds us never to give iCloud credentials when losing an iPhone ), which requires entering the email the previous owner’s Apple ID and follow a few steps before you can use iPhone .

This means that we will not be able to use an iPhone that is not ours without the consent of its legitimate owner, so at this point we should desist from changing the lock code. If, on the other hand, we are talking about our iPhone for which we have simply forgotten the code , we can restore it. Taking into account that we will need a PC with iTunes or a Mac, we will do it like this:

  1. If the iPhone was focused on the computer, we disconnected it.
  2. We turn off the iPhone.
  3. We press and hold the side button (from iPhone 8 onwards), the volume down button on iPhone 7 or the home button on the first generation iPhone SE or iPhone 6S and earlier.
  4. While holding down the button, we plug the iPhone into the computer.
  5. We continue to hold the button down until we see a recovery mode message on the screen.
  6. When Finder or iTunes detects the iPhone and offers to restore it, we’ll tap Restore, then, if asked, tap Restore & Update .
  7. Once the process is finished, which can take several minutes, we can unplug the iPhone and configure it to use it.

During the configuration we can restore the iCloud backup , if we have it, or the backup on the Mac, if applicable. With this we will have all the information at our disposal and we will have been able to create a new code during the configuration process , leaving behind the old code that we did not know.
