How to reset AirTags

Your propensity to forget around the objects that you usually use in everyday life, such as house keys, car keys and backpack, has led you to buy an AirTag , i.e. the well-known Apple smart tracker that allows to locate and track anything this device is hooked up to. After learning how it works, thanks to another guide of mine on the subject, and after having associated and configured the AirTag to your Apple ID , however, you are wondering if there is a method to reset the smart tracker in order to be able to use on another profile.

If in this regard, while searching the web for how to reset AirTags , you have come across this tutorial of mine on the subject, I have good news for you! In fact, in this guide I will show you all the steps to be able to restore the Apple smart tracker to the factory settings. Don’t worry, the procedure isn’t complex. However, it is necessary to follow some precise guidelines.

To do everything correctly, therefore, take a few minutes of time and carefully read what I am about to illustrate: you will see that in a very short time you will be able to reset your AirTag without any problems. Let’s not waste any more time and let’s start analyzing together the procedure to follow. I wish you a good reading!

Preliminary information

Before analyzing specifically the procedure to follow to understand how to reset an AirTag , I think it appropriate to show you some preliminary information on why it is necessary to reset the AirTag if you want to use it on a different Apple ID , with respect to the one to which it is associated .

The AirTag is a device which, when connected to a personal object and associated with your Apple ID, allows you to precisely locate the object and find it in any position through joint use with another Apple device (either iPhone or iPad ) associated with the same profile as the smart tracker.

The use of AirTags is therefore strictly personal and for this reason it is possible to associate the tracker with only one profile at a time . When it is linked to a precise Apple ID, it remains exclusively linked to this and can be located by a device that is associated with the same profile as the AirTag.

Having said that, if you find yourself wanting to use the AirTag on a different Apple ID than the one to which it was associated, you must necessarily reset and reset the smart tracker through special procedures that we will now analyze.

How to reset an AirTag

As just mentioned, an AirTag can only be associated with one Apple ID at a time. In case you want to configure the smart tracker on another Apple profile, you will therefore necessarily have to reset the AirTag by resetting it.

In order to reset the AirTag, disconnecting it from the Apple ID to which it is associated and therefore being able to use it with another profile, you can proceed in two different ways: one digital , using an Apple device connected to the same Apple ID, and one manual , by physically on the smart tracker. Let’s analyze them both.

The simplest and most immediate method of restoring an AirTag is the digital one , i.e. the reset method which can be implemented using an Apple device associated with the same Apple ID as the smart tracker, such as an iPhone or an iPad .

To be able to restore the AirTag following this procedure, you must first have an iPhone or iPad connected to the same IDApple and then you must make sure that the Apple portable device you are using is within the Bluetooth range of the smart tracker, then start on your iPhone or on your iPad the system application Find My which you can find pre-installed in the Utilities category . Once the app has opened, go to the Devices area , press the AirTag associated with your Apple ID, then scroll through the smart tracker settings until you see the Remove item option . Tap onRemove object , then press the Remove button again in the Remove AirTag popup that opens.

Once this is done, as also specified by the application itself, the AirTag is removed from the Apple ID to which it is associated and can be activated, configured and used by another person with another account.

The other method of restoring an AirTag is the manual one , i.e. the reset method which can be implemented by performing a series of actions directly and physically on the smart tracker aimed at resetting the AirTag in order to be able to use it with another Apple ID.

To be able to do this recovery mode, you must first have digitally removed the AirTag from the connected Apple ID, just as analyzed above. This manual mode is in fact used to reset the AirTag if the smart tracker has been removed from the previous Apple ID using an iPhone or iPad without these being within the Bluetooth range of the AirTag and therefore without the digital procedure was able to be completed correctly.

In this case, before being able to use the AirTag with a new Apple ID and with other devices, you must reset the AirTag manually by implementing a series of precise steps that we will now analyze together.

Take the AirTag and remove any cover or external accessory from it. Once this is done, press down on the polished stainless steel battery cover on the back of the smart tracker and rotate counterclockwise until the cover stops rotating.

At this point, after having opened the rear cover of the AirTag, remove it and take out the battery present in it. Then insert the battery again and press it into the housing downwards until you hear a sound indicating that the battery is correctly connected, then hold it down until the sound stops. When the chime stops, repeat this process four more times , removing and reinserting the battery and then pressing it into the slot until you no longer hear the chime, just as illustrated above.

In total, therefore, you must perform this operation five times , hearing each time you press the drum the sound of correct connection for an amount of five times. The fifth sound you hear after the five-step repeat is done is different from the previous ones, indicating that the AirTag is finally ready to be paired with a new Apple ID.

At this point, reposition the smart tracker cover by aligning the three special tabs with the three slots in the AirTag structure, then press the cover and rotate it clockwise until it stops rotating and until it is perfectly fixed.

Once the AirTag is closed, the manual reset procedure can be considered completed and you can therefore proceed to link the smart tracker with another account.

As you could understand from what has been illustrated, the manual reset mode involves a series of rather long and not very immediate steps compared to the digital reset mode, therefore my advice is to always reset the AirTag digitally when it is within range. of action of the Bluetooth of the Apple device you use to complete the procedure, resorting instead to the manual mode only in cases of extreme necessity. More info here .

How to reset AirTag found

You happened to find an abandoned AirTag around and after checking for yourself if the owner was still around, you wondered if it’s possible to reuse the Apple smart tracker found.

Before analyzing whether it is possible to do this, I logically want to remind you that one cannot take possession of someone else’s lost and found today. In the same way, therefore, it is not possible and it is not allowed to make someone else’s AirTag found around.

If a similar situation has occurred to you, the correct behavior to adopt must be to check if the AirTag is in Lost mode (to do this, I refer you to the official Apple support guide) to then be able to return it to its rightful owner .
