How to prevent your WiFi network from being hacked

Did you know that it is possible to prevent your WiFi from being hacked by activating a very specific parameter? Unfortunately, very few routers have this possibility and it is not yet possible to activate it in all WiFi networks, although if you have a modern router you can see if you have it.

We are talking about WPA3 encryption , the most advanced to date and that should be enabled on your router if you want to avoid hacking . It is nothing more than a protocol in charge of asking for the password when you are going to connect to a wireless network and it is the natural substitute for the popular WPA2 encryption.

The reality is that WPA3 is much more secure than WPA2 even when simple keys are used to protect your WiFi network. For example, among other things, 192-bit encryption is now used, which means that someone who wants to break it has a much more difficult time.

Due to its insecurity, Windows 11 is already ceasing to support WEP and WPA/WPA2 TKIP WiFi networks , so sooner or later, you will have to change your router, not only by recommendation, but also because if you want to connect to a WiFi network on this system operational you will not be able to do it.

The problem with WPA3 is that it is a relatively new encryption and it is not available on all routers yet , in fact, it can be activated on some of the most modern ones and more and more have it. Of course, it is possible that even your current router can implement it at some point through a firmware update.

How to activate WPA3 encryption

Bearing in mind that activating WPA3 encryption can save you from possible hacks on your WiFi network, this is what you have to do to enable it on your router, or at least check if you have it available. We will do the example with a D-Link router that already offers WPA3:

  • Open your usual browser and access the web interface of the router , in this case it is done by entering the URL with the IP of the gateway to the router, which is 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 , the most typical.
  • Now enter the username and password (these data are usually registered under the router itself).
  • Enter the “Wireless” or “wireless connection” section and look for the “Security mode” parameter , it can be called “WP3 encryption” or simply “WPA3” on another router.
  • Change the current WPA2 you have for WPA3 if it appears on the list, you will have to wait a few seconds after it is activated.

And that’s it, get out of the router and now your WiFi network will be more secure against hacking by activating this simple parameter . In the event that the option to activate WPA3 does not appear on the list, you have no choice but to leave WPA2 or even WPA2-PSK or similar enabled, which are what your router would admit.
