Recently, some netizens asked me how to migrate the system to the newly added hard disk. We can use DiskGenius software, which can easily migrate the system from one hard disk to another hard disk, or more commonly, migrate the system from the hard disk to the SSD solid state Hard disk, U disk, etc. Below I will teach you the detailed steps.
How to migrate the system to the new hard disk preparation:

- Prepare an 8G-16G U disk. It is especially important to note that the U disk needs to be formatted during production. If there is important data in the U disk, please back up the data in advance.
- Please close the anti-virus software as much as possible before running the U disk boot disk tool (because the U disk startup will read and write the disk, it may be killed by the software and falsely report and cause the production to fail). In Windows XP system, double-click to run it, in Windows 7/ 8/10 system, please right click to run as administrator.
- Note that it needs to be produced under the condition of networking. To make a U disk boot disk, you need to download PE online. Please pay attention.
Use DiskGenius tool system to migrate to a new hard disk Step 1: Make a U disk boot disk
- After downloading the U disk and starting the software, open it. We choose to start the U disk to prepare a pe U disk boot disk. As shown below:
- Try to exit the antivirus and security software to prevent false positives, and then select the USB flash drive to be created. After confirming that there is no important data in the USB flash drive, click the “Create a bootable USB flash drive” button to create it. ,As shown below:
- Select only make a bootable U disk, click “One-click to create a U disk to start the U disk” and start downloading PE . As shown below:
- Click “Make Bootable U Disk” and start downloading PE. After downloading, it will be automatically written to the mobile U disk. At this time, we just need to wait patiently for the completion of the production. As shown below:
- After the system download is completed, the downloaded system will be automatically copied to the U disk to become the U disk system installation disk, which is more convenient and simpler than directly downloading the system and putting it in the U disk. A successful prompt pops up:

- After the click is made successfully, we can use the start button to query to see how to quickly set the U disk to boot into PE, as shown below:
- After selecting the u disk to start , if it is legacy boot, the menu will appear (if it is uefi boot directly into win10 pe), we directly select win10 pe to enter the soldier pe, as shown in the following figure;
- Then run the pe desktop diskgenius partition tool, click the “Tools – System Migration” menu item, as shown below;
- Select the target disk of the migration system, and then click the “OK” button. The target disk can be smaller than the source disk, but the capacity of the target disk must be greater than the total amount of used data of the source disk, as shown in the following figure;
- For computers that support UEFI, you can also directly specify whether to change the startup items of the system after the system migration is completed. Click the “Start” button to prepare for the migration, as shown in the following figure;
- The program displays the following warning, all data on the target disk will be overwritten. After confirming that there is no problem, click the “OK” button. As shown below;
- The DiskGenius software will allow the user to select the mode of system migration, as shown in the figure below;
Hot migration is to migrate the system to the second hard disk without shutting down the computer. During the migration process, the user can still perform various operations on the computer without affecting the user’s use of the computer. Reboot to WinPE, the DiskGenius software will restart the computer, automatically enter the WinPE system, automatically start DiskGenius under WinPE and automatically perform system migration. In most cases, it is more convenient and safe to use the hot migration method. It is recommended to use this system migration mode.
- Click the “Hot Migration” button, DiskGenius will start the hot migration operation, as shown in the figure below;
In the system migration window, a progress bar will be displayed. The progress bar shows the approximate progress of the system migration. Below the progress bar, the data size that has been copied and that has not been copied, as well as the elapsed time and the estimated remaining time required to complete the system migration will be displayed.
- After the system migration is completed, the DiskGenius software will give a prompt that the system migration is completed, as shown in the following figure;
After the migration system is migrated to the second hard disk (or SSD solid state drive, U disk, etc.), if it is a computer that supports UEFI, and the settings are completed before the migration system, boot from the target disk. After restarting the computer, it will automatically start with the new system after the migration. Otherwise, you need to manually enter the BIOS settings, set the boot hard disk as a new hard disk, and then use this hard disk to start the computer and enter the system.
After entering the system, you will find that the software installed in the Windows system, together with the data in the original system partition, have been migrated to the new system partition of the target hard disk. You can use the computer as before without changing anything, without reinstalling the system, reinstalling software, or copying data, which is very convenient.
