A new functionality begins to be extended to Xiaomi mobiles: with it it is possible to expand the RAM memory with an extension that is applied virtually. Thanks to a few simple steps, which can be performed from the phone’s settings, adding three gigabytes to the phone’s RAM is a matter of seconds . Although yes, the performance of this virtual memory is lower than that of the “real” gigs.
Electronic devices, such as computers or mobile phones, back up commonly used information in two types of memory: RAM and FLASH. The first, more volatile and faster, allows you to store what is running at the moment ; the second, more extensive and persistent, penalizes speed in order to serve as permanent storage . Operating systems allow you to convert FLASH memory into RAM memory. And Xiaomi has already included the option.
Extend the RAM of your Xiaomi by three gigabytes
The function that we are talking about, which begins to be available in MIUI 12.5 and only for some devices, is planned to be progressively deployed until it reaches most of the Xiaomi catalog. Thanks to this “Memory Extension”, it is possible to “convert” three gigabytes of storage (FLASH) into three gigabytes of volatile memory (RAM) .

Vivo and OPPO bring virtual RAM to Android: what it is and what advantages it has for your mobile
Despite the logical advantages of increasing the RAM memory by three GB (this allows keeping more apps loaded in the background with an improvement in multitasking), there are also drawbacks: virtual memory will always be less efficient than real memory . In addition, and since the RAM memory maintains a higher rate of reads and writes, the risk of storage degradation increases.
The “Memory Extension” is now available on mobiles such as the Xiaomi Mi 11 . To search for this function on your Xiaomi, and activate it, you need to perform the following steps:
- Enter your phone’s settings and look for the option “Additional settings”.
- Locate the “Memory Extension” menu. If it does not appear, you will have to wait for Xiaomi to update the phone with that function.
- Activate “Memory extension” and the RAM memory of your Xiaomi will have been increased by three GB in a virtual way.
Having more RAM memory for software can be an advantage in very limited mobiles (3 or 4 GB of RAM, for example), but it is unnecessary in phones like the Xiaomi Mi 11 that we have used for the test (8 GB of RAM) . Even so, any improvement in memory management is always welcome: it will be up to you to decide whether to apply it or not.
