Would you like to have a famous song as your iPhone ringtone? Maybe the latest hit from your favorite band? So I suggest you now open the iTunes Store, selecting the icon with the white star on a purple background that you can find on the home screen of the “melafonino”, and browse the hundreds of tones included in the catalog.
To discover all the tones available in the store, select the tab called Ringtones in the menu at the bottom right and scroll down the page that opens. Inside, you’ll find a list of hottest and hottest ringtones of the moment, some content featured by Apple staff, and a number of themed collections (for example, 80s hits, rock classics, etc.).
If you want, you can also browse the full charts in the iTunes Store by clicking on the corresponding tab, and browse the tones according to their respective genres by selecting the corresponding item located in the upper right corner.
To search for a ringtone based on a song title or artist name, select the Search tab at the bottom center, then type in the keywords that interest you and select the Ringtone tab of the results page (top right).

Now let’s see how to download custom ringtones for iPhone, that is, “cut” songs from your iTunes library to your computer. The operation is long enough to complete, but it is not difficult at all.
Note that if you are using a Mac with macOS 10.15 Catalina or later, the Music application has taken over from iTunes, so you have to use it. It should also be noted that this practice cannot be done on songs synced through Apple Music and / or iCloud, as they are protected by DRM.
With that said, the first step you should take is launching iTunes on your computer. If you use Windows, you must first download and install the program (if you have not already done so, of course), as I explained in my guide on the subject, and then select the link that is added in the Start menu. On the other hand, in macOS, both iTunes and Music (depending on the version of your operating system) are pre-installed, so you can click directly on the icon (the one with the musical note on a white background) on the Launchpad.
Once the program window appears on the screen, locate the song you want to turn into a ringtone in your iTunes / Music library, right-click on it and select Information from the menu that appears. Then select the Options tab in the window that opens, place a check mark next to the start and end items, and type the start and end points of the ringtone you want to create in the appropriate text fields. The duration should not exceed 30-40 seconds.
Now, click the OK button, select the song in your iTunes / Music library again, and choose File> Convert> Create AAC Version from the top menu. This will create an M4A file with only the part of the song that you selected earlier.
If this option is not available, click the Edit item (on Windows) or the iTunes / Music item (on MacOS) at the top and then click Preferences from the menu at the top. In the window that opens, select the File tab, click the Import Settings button, and choose the AAC Encoder option from the Import Using drop-down menu. To confirm the changes you have made, click the OK button.
Now right-click on the title of the “cloned” song you just added to your iTunes / Music library and select Show in Windows Explorer (on Windows) or Show in Finder (on MacOS) in the menu that opens. Next, change the name of the file, right-click on it and choose the Rename option from the context menu, change its extension from M4A to M4R and delete it from your iTunes / Music library, always click with the Right-click on it and choose the Delete from library option from the contextual menu that opens. When asked if you want to delete the file, remember to select the operation not to delete the source file as well.
Once the operation is finished, connect your iPhone to the computer with the appropriate cable and, if this is the first time you have done this operation, authorize the connection by clicking the Continue button that appears in the iTunes / Music window, and then the Authorize item visible on the smartphone screen and typing the latter’s unlock code.
Then, click on the iPhone icon in iTunes (upper left corner), select the Ringtones item in the left sidebar and drag the renamed M4R file to the program window.
If you use MacOS 10.15 Catalina or later, as the Music application does not have the functions to synchronize data with the iPhone, you must use the Finder. So, open the Finder by clicking its icon (the smiley face icon) in the Dock bar, select your iPhone name in the left sidebar, go to the General tab, and drag the M4R file of the ringtone. call within it, which will automatically sync with the iPhone.
When you’re done, remember to disconnect the iPhone from the computer and set the ringtone you just created and transferred to the device by going to iOS Settings, as I explained in the last part of this step at the beginning of this guide.
How to download iPhone ringtones without iTunes
If the audio file that you want to convert into a ringtone is already present on your iPhone, you can do it directly from your smartphone, without having to go through your computer, using GarageBand, an application developed by Apple for iOS, which allows you to create and edit music and that is also useful for the purpose in question.
To download the application to your device, visit the corresponding section of the App Store, press the Get button, then the Install button and authorize the download of the application through Face ID, Touch ID or Apple ID password. Then start GarageBand by pressing the Open button on the screen or by selecting the GarageBand icon (the one with the white guitar on an orange background) that you just added to the home screen.
Now that you see the main GarageBand screen, tap the loop select button (the one that looks like an eye) in the upper right corner of the screen, select the File tab on the new screen, and navigate to the location on your iPhone where Find the audio file you are interested in, then tap on it, and while holding it, drag and drop the song onto the app’s timeline.
Next, move the track indicators to adjust the song length to 30-40 seconds, tap the down arrow button in the upper left corner, tap My Songs, press and hold for a few seconds in the preview of the project created and choose Share from the menu that appears.
To finish, select the Ringtone option, write the name you want to assign to the ringtone and touch the Export item in the upper right corner. Then set the ringtone by tapping the Ringtone option in the Use ringtone as you see it panel, and you’re done.
