How to download photos from iPhone to Windows PC
Let’s start this guide by seeing, together, how to download photos from iPhone to Windows PC with the help of the USB cable that you should have received with the phone. Basically, you have two different ways to go: using iTunes together with the Windows photo import wizard, or avoiding the installation of the official Apple program and making the transfer using a second third-party software. The choice is up to you!
How to download photos from iPhone to PC with iTunes
At the time of writing this guide, iTunes does not include a direct feature for transferring images, but it is essential to ensure that the photos can be downloaded through the manager built into Windows.
So, if you have not already done so, download and install the Apple software on your computer: if you use Windows 10 or later editions of the operating system (e.g. Windows 11 ), connected to this website , click on the button to open the Microsoft Store (if necessary) and then click on the Install and Open buttons , to download iTunes and open it.
If, on the other hand, you are using a version of Windows older than 10 (eg Windows 8.1 ), download the classic installation file for iTunes, by going to the Apple website and clicking on the Download now iTunes for Windows button ; when the download is complete, open the file obtained and press the Next , Install , Yes and Finish buttons to complete the program setup.
If you find it difficult to put into practice one of the steps that I showed you above, you can take a look at my guide on how to install iTunes on Windows , in which I have explained the topic in great detail.
The next step is to start iTunes and authorize communication between PC and iPhone for the first time: when the Apple program opens, connect the phone to the computer via USB cable and click on the iPhone icon which, in the meantime, is pop-up on top of iTunes.
At this point, click on the Continue button which should appear on the computer screen, tap the Authorize button which, instead, is shown on the phone display and enter the unlock code of the latter device, to grant the necessary permissions. If, after clicking on the iPhone icon in iTunes, you should instead go directly to the phone summary screen, it means that the authorization has already been given in the past.
Once the communication between the two devices is enabled, you can safely close iTunes and switch to the tool for importing Windows images, as the operating system should be able to correctly access the memory of the “iPhone by”.
Once iTunes is installed, you can achieve your goal in several ways: by importing images via the Photos app, using the Import Wizard tool, or by accessing images directly via the File Explorer.
Photos (Windows 10 and later)
If you are using Windows 10 or a later edition of the Microsoft operating system, open the Photos application calling it from the Start menu and click on the Import button located at the top right; if you do not see it, click on the […] button and then on the Import item , located in the panel that appears. Now, choose you want to import images from a connected device by selecting the appropriate item from the menu that appears and wait a few seconds for Photos to analyze the iPhone memory.
When the scan is complete, you should see the thumbnails of the images stored on your phone appear: you can select photos by clicking on their respective previews, or choose all the images acquired on a specific date , placing the check mark next to the date itself. Alternatively, use the drop-down menu at the top to select all the elements or those acquired from the last import .
Once you have made your choice, indicate whether to delete the original elements after importing or not by selecting the appropriate box (keep in mind that, by doing so, all the images will be deleted from the phone memory following the transfer) and click on the Import button xx of xx elements , to transfer the photos to your computer.
By default, images will be stored in the Windows Pictures folder and divided into sub-folders organized by date (if specified); to change the default folder for importing images, when you reach the preview selection screen, click on the Change destination item and then on the Add another folder button , located at the bottom.
Image import (all Windows editions)
Alternatively, you can achieve the same result using the Image Import Wizard, built into all supported editions of Windows. To access it, open the File Explorer (the yellow folder icon located on the taskbar), click on the This PC / Computer resident icon in the left sidebar and then right-click on the iPhone icon (it should be in the Devices and drives pane ) and select the Import images and videos item from the menu that appears.
Now, wait a few moments for all the images and videos on the iPhone to be cataloged and, if you intend to transfer all the photos on the iPhone directly to the Windows Pictures folder , put the check mark next to Import all new items now and click on the Import button to start the transfer.
If, on the other hand, you prefer to select the images manually and / or organize them into groups, put the check mark next to the item Review, organize and group the elements to be imported and click on the Next button . Now, use the adjustment bar located next to the Adjust groups item to adjust the time interval that Windows must use to divide the various groups of photos, put the check mark next to the groups to import and, if you want to customize the names of the groups of photos, expand the boxes relating to the latter and click on the appropriate text field
Finally, click on the Import button to start copying the images to your computer and wait patiently for the operation to be completed. The imported photos will be stored in the Windows Pictures folder and organized into sub-folders renamed with the current date.
If you want to change the name to be automatically assigned to the photos or the folder in which to transfer them, before starting to import the images, click on the More options item at the bottom of the selection screen and adjust the settings you prefer from the drop-down menus present in the window that opens; moreover, by placing the check mark next to the item Delete files from device after importing, you can make sure that the images imported to the PC are automatically deleted from the phone memory.
If you are not interested in organizing your photos into folders or assigning them tags, or if you only need to copy a few photos, you can also directly access the folder in which iPhone stores the images taken by the camera, using the Windows File Explorer.
So, after opening the latter, click on the item This PC / Computer located on the side, double-click on the iPhone icon and open the Internal Storage> DCIM folders , to view all the folders containing the photos taken and videos made. You can transfer the items you want to the computer memory simply by dragging them to a folder of your choice, or using the most classic of copy and paste .
How to download photos from iPhone to PC without iTunes
If, for some reason, you can’t (or don’t want to) install iTunes, you can rely on third-party software like iMazing , which allows you to manage Apple portable devices with ease.
Basically, iMazing is available for free for Windows (but also for macOS), albeit with limitations: for example, it is possible to transfer a maximum of 50 images, or other elements, both from the phone to the computer and vice versa. To exceed this last limit, you need to purchase the paid version of the program, with prices starting from € 33.99 / year.
If you are interested in trying the program in question, open this web page and click on the Free Download button , to start downloading the software installation package. After obtaining the file in question, run it, click on the Yes and Next buttons and check the box for accepting the terms of the license agreement . Finally, click on the Next (three consecutive times), Install and Finish buttons and, if prompted, authorize the automatic download of Apple drivers from the Internet.
At the end of the installation, start iMazing (if it does not open automatically), then click on the Continue test button and connect the “iPhone by” to the computer via the dedicated USB cable ; now, unlock the latter device and authorize the PC to access the memory, by replying affirmatively to the message that appears on the display and then entering the phone unlock code .
After this step too, go back to the computer , click on the Later button to avoid creating a backup of the device and, when you see the iMazing management panel, first click on the iPhone icon that appears at the top left and then on the Photo button , located in the sidebar of the program.
At this point, choose the album in the library that contains the images you prefer (or select the item All photos , to view all the images in the phone memory and drag the photo you want to transfer to the Windows desktop, or to any other folder you want; if you are using the free version of iMazing, view the remaining transferable items and click the Continue button .
If you wish, you can select multiple images at the same time by pressing and holding the Ctrl key on your keyboard; alternatively, select the album or category of images you wish to transfer (eg. All photos ), click on the Export button located at the bottom and use the options that appear immediately afterwards, to indicate the groups of images to be transferred, such as organize folders and the quality of copied files ; finally, click on the Next button and, after choosing the folder in which to transfer the photos, click on the OK button and that’s it.
How to Download Photos from iPhone to PC: Mac
After seeing how to act on a Windows computer, let’s move on to the procedure – or rather, the procedures – to follow on macOS . Since Mac computers are produced by Apple itself, within the latter it is possible to find already installed all the software and drivers necessary for the transfer of images (and videos) from iPhone and iPad.
So, to start, connect the phone to the Mac using the supplied USB cable and, if this is the first time you do this, authorize the communication between the two devices: open the macOS Finder , click on the name of the resident iPhone on the side (in the Devices section ) and click on the Authorize button ; then, touch the Authorize button visible on the iPhone screen and enter the phone unlock code , to finish.
Once this operation is completed, you can act in two different ways: import the images into the Photo library , or use the Image Acquisition utility , to manage them as independent files (which can be transferred to other folders on the Mac or to other connected devices).
To transfer photos to the Mac photo library, connect the phone to the computer using the supplied USB cable , start the macOS Photos application (the one with the colored flower icon located on the Dock ) and click on the visible iPhone name in the program sidebar, under the Devices section .
Now, use the Import to drop-down menu to choose the album / folder in which to transfer the images, choose whether to delete the items from the phone or not by acting on the appropriate box and, to transfer all the photos on the iPhone (but not in the gallery of Photos), click on the Import all new photos button located at the top right.
If you want, you can also transfer only some images to the Mac: in this case, you must select the photos of your interest by clicking on the respective thumbnails while holding down the cmd key on the keyboard and then pressing the Import selection xx button , also resident at the top To the right.
If you prefer to save the photos freely, in a folder on your computer or on an external device, you need to turn to other solutions, such as the Image Capture utility , also installed “standard” on the Mac.
To start, open the folder more of the Launchpad (the icon grid that resides in the Dock) and double-click on its icon; now, select the iPhone icon located in the left sidebar of the window that opens, choose the folder in which to import the photos from the Import to drop-down menu and then press the Download all button to start the data transfer .
If you do not want to import all the photos to the Mac but only some of them, select them by clicking on the respective thumbnails while holding down the ctrl key on the keyboard and, when you are done, click on the Download button ; alternatively, drag them with the mouse to a folder of your choice.
How to download photos from iPhone to PC with iCloud
Thanks to iCloud , it is possible to create an online backup of all the photos taken with the iPhone and download them to the computer completely automatically, through the dedicated client, or manually, using the iCloud website.
Going into more detail, there are two services that allow you to sync photos via iCloud: Photo Stream and iCloud Photos . Both services are free, but they differ significantly from each other.
For example, Photo Stream can store only a limited amount of photos (up to 1,000 per hour, 10,000 per day, and 25,000 per month) for a total period of 30 days , after which media items are deleted. The images in the Photo Stream are not accessible from the iCloud site , nor from the iCloud client for Windows , however they do not affect the storage space available on the platform; However, it should be noted that the Photo Streaming platform is not available for the most recent Apple IDs.
ICloud Photos , on the other hand, is Apple’s service dedicated to archiving photos and videos in definitive form, which does not limit the number of uploaded items or their “duration”: in fact, they remain in the cloud forever. unless you proceed with manual deletion.
The iCloud Photos platform is also free, but the space occupied by images and videos affects the space available on iCloud Drive : for this reason, you may need to further expand the free 5 GB of the basic iCloud account, by activating a paid plan (with prices starting at € 0.99 / month for 50 GB of cloud space). To learn more, feel free to check out my tutorial dedicated to purchasing additional iCloud storage . What’s more, items uploaded to iCloud Photos can also be viewed and downloaded from the platform’s website.
To activate the automatic upload of iPhone photos (and videos) to iCloud, tap on the gear symbol located on the Home screen or in the App Library, in order to open the iOS Settings , tap on your name and then on the iCloud and Photos items ; then, touch the iCloud and Photos items and activate the lever relating to the storage platform you have chosen to use: iCloud Photos or My Photo Stream. From now on, you can access and access images uploaded to the cloud via the iCloud client for Windows, using the macOS Photos application, or via the web.
Now, to quickly download images from iCloud on Windows, you need to download the platform’s official client: if you use Windows 10 or a later edition of the operating system, you can get the program directly from the Microsoft Store . If, on the other hand, you are running an older version of the operating system, you can obtain the installation file by going to this website and clicking on the download iCloud for Windows link on the Apple website .
After obtaining the file, start it, accept the terms of the license agreement by checking the appropriate box and complete the program setup by clicking on the Install , Yes (twice in a row) and Close buttons . When finished, restart your computer if prompted. If all went well, the iCloud client should open automatically; if not, use the icon which, in the meantime, has been added to the Start menu .
If everything went smoothly, you should be asked to log in with your Apple ID: complete this operation and, if it is your intention to iCloud only to access the images, leave all the boxes unchecked, except the one corresponding to the voice iCloud Drive and vocals Photos . If necessary, also check the box for iCloud Photos and click on the Finish button . Finally, click on the Apply button and Close the iCloud client.
From this moment on, you can view all the images belonging to the iCloud Photos album by accessing the folder of the same name, directly from the sidebar of the Windows File Explorer; to download one or more images, all you have to do is drag them to the folder on your computer of your choice. That’s all!
Downloading the images on iCloud via the macOS Photos application is very simple: first, open the latter program using the colored flower icon visible on the Dock bar , click on the Photo menu at the top left and select the item Preferences… from the menu that appears.
Once you have reached the next screen, go to the iCloud tab and put the check mark next to the service you have chosen to use: iCloud Photos or My Photo Stream . Keep in mind that, following this operation, the photos belonging to the Mac camera roll will also be uploaded to the previously selected platform.
In any case, once cloud sharing is enabled, the images in iCloud Photos will automatically appear in the Photos library on Mac. Pay attention, instead, to the items belonging to the My Stream Photos album which, as I explained above ago, they only “last” 30 days: To save a photo to your computer, drag it from the My Photo Stream album in the Photos application to your Mac desktop (or any folder). To select multiple photos, click on their thumbnails by pressing and holding the ctrl key on your keyboard.
Finally, if you want to download the photos from iCloud without installing any program, you can use the platform’s website: therefore connect to this website , log in with your Apple ID credentials and click on the Photo icon , resident on the page next one.
At this point, choose the image you are interested in downloading by clicking with the mouse on the respective previews (with the help of the ctrl key on the keyboard, if you intend to make a multiple selection) and click on the cloud symbol with the down arrow , to download. More info here .
How to download photos from iPhone to PC without cable
In addition to iCloud , you should know that there are services that allow you to download photos from iPhone to PC without a cable : below you will list the ones that, in my opinion, are the best.
Snapdrop (Windows / macOS)
The first service I want to tell you about is Snapdrop : it is a free web platform dedicated to file sharing, which works with any browser for computers and tablets. The only requirement, in this case, is that the devices involved are connected to the same Wi-Fi network .
Having said that, let’s see how to proceed: start the browser of your choice on your computer, connect to the snapdrop.net website , switch to iPhone and repeat the same operation. Now, tap on the name assigned to the computer , select the Photo Library item from the menu that appears and use the next panel to select the photo (or photos) of your interest; finally, tap on the Add item to send it to the computer.
Finally, return to the latter device, open the browser tab dedicated to snapdrop.net and, when you see the preview of the photo, click on the Save button to download it; if you have sent multiple files, repeat the same operation for all the other images (or remove the check mark from the word Ask to save each file before downloading , so as to activate the automatic download of the items).
AirDrop , on the other hand, is a proprietary technology from Apple that allows you to transfer files between two devices wirelessly, suitable for those who need to occasionally share images.
Before being able to share files via AirDrop, the service must be activated on the Mac: to do this, open the menu Go> Airdrop of macOS and wait for the appropriate Finder window to be shown ; now, if necessary, click on the button to enable Bluetooth and / or Wi-Fi and set the drop-down menu Allow me to be found at the option Contacts only , unless you need to receive images from people not included in the Contacts app.
At this point, switch to iPhone , open the photo you intend to transfer to the computer and tap the iOS share button ; then, tap on the AirDrop item and then on the name of the Mac with which to share the image; finally, it returns to the latter computer and, if necessary, accepts the transfer by clicking on the appropriate button. The photo thus received will be saved in the Download folder . More info here .
Other online services
In addition to the solutions seen above, know that there are many other cloud services that allow you to share photos, videos and other files between iPhone and your computer, such as Google Photos / Google Drive , Dropbox or OneDrive . To find out more, I refer you to reading my guide to the best cloud services , in which I have explained everything to you in great detail.
