How to Disable Transient MultiMonitor Manager (TMM)

The Transient Multi-Monitor Manager (also abbreviated TMM) is a built-in feature in Windows Vista and Windows 7.

The TMM (in English Transient Multimon Manager ) is active by default in Windows Vista , while it is disabled by default in Windows 7.

It is used to improve the user experience , when the user uses external displays connected to his computer , such as a second monitor to work on graphics or videos, or a projector.

When Windows Vista (or Windows 7) is launched and TMM is active, the system searches for any external monitors connected in Plug-and-Play mode to the computer before continuing with Windows startup.

This search takes about 2-3 seconds to complete. During this time, you may see a slight flickering on the screen followed by a black screen. At this point, the system starts up automatically.

This feature was designed for those who make a business use of the computer .

In fact, if an external screen, projector or TV are connected to your computer, the TMM identifies the connected device automatically and quickly, and displays a popup to set up and use the external device in the best possible way. Also, remember the settings for this screen for future use.

But if you don’t use an external display or other similar device, this service is not very useful to you .

On the contrary, the search activated automatically when the computer starts up slows down the start of the computer .

Hence, disabling TMM is highly recommended for those who do not use external displays .

You may find this lesson useful even if you have Windows 7, to verify that TMM is actually disabled on your computer.

How to Disable Transient MultiMonitor Manager

There are two options to disable Transient MultiMonitor Manager:

1. Disable Transient Multimonitor Manager With Scheduler

This first option disables TMM through the Scheduler .

These are the instructions:

  • click on the Start buttonat the bottom left
  • click on Control Panel
  • select the Scheduleroption
  • In the screen that opens, click on Library Task Scheduler(in English Task Scheduler Library )
  • click on Microsoft
  • click on Windows
  • click on MobilePC
  • at this point, in the central pane of the Planning Utilityselect the TMM item by clicking on it with the right mouse button.
  • in the menu that opens select Disable(in English Disable).

Restart the system and at this point the TMM functionality will no longer start automatically.

2. Disable Transient Multimonitor Manager With Registry

The second solution to disable this feature requires an intervention on the registry :

  • click on the Start button
  • click on Run
  • type Regedit
  • click on OK
  • open the registry, navigate to the entry: Computer \ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ TMM.
  • in the box on the right of the register click with the left mouse button on the UseIViewHelperitem .
  • in the menu that opens click on
  • in the Value Datapane, change the value from 1 (feature enabled) to 0 (feature disabled).

At this point close the registry and restart the computer to confirm the changes and check if the start has been speeded up.

If in the future you want to re-enable Transitory Multimonitor Manager , simply re- enable it via the Scheduler (by clicking on Enable in the menu that appears when you click on the TMM item), or via the Registry (by changing the value from 0 to 1).
