How to choose diapers for a newborn

Diapers are the first necessity for a newborn baby. They provide comfort during sleep and wakefulness, significantly simplifying the life of young parents. The range of hygiene products on the market is rich and diverse, and it is often difficult for inexperienced consumers to choose the right products that will protect against leaks and discomfort. Let’s consider the main selection criteria that need to be considered before buying diapers for a child.

Why do you need diapers?

The principle of “work” of all diapers is the same: they are designed to absorb moisture, prevent contamination of clothes and the appearance of diaper rash on the baby’s delicate skin. Regardless of the brand, hygiene products have three layers:

  1. The upper layer easily passes liquids.
  2. The inner layer retains moisture.
  3. An outer layer that protects against leakage.

Most often, the inner layer is made of cellulose – a material that perfectly absorbs and retains liquid. Meanwhile, some diapers use synthetic granules that turn moisture into a gel.

Criteria for choosing diapers

When choosing quality diapers for a newborn baby, several factors and aspects should be taken into account:

  • the size of the products, which should correspond to the weight of the child (based on statistical data, the average weight of a newborn varies within 3-3.5 kg; diapers No. 1 (baby weight up to 5-6 kg) and No. 2 (calculated on children weighing 7-8 kg), but there are options No. 0, intended for crumbs weighing less than 2.5 kg);
  • comfort and a soft surface (a diaper for a newborn baby should not cause discomfort to the delicate skin of a child, so the surface should be as pleasant to the touch as possible and not cause irritation);
  • the rate of moisture absorption (the better the diaper, the faster it absorbs liquid, leaving the baby’s skin dry);
  • no leaks and a low level of moisture transfer (even when pressing on a filled diaper, its surface must remain dry);
  • the reliability of the fasteners and the elasticity of the strap (the hygiene product should fit tightly to the child’s body, but not restrict its movements and in no case compress the blood vessels);
  • hypoallergenicity and environmental friendliness of the materials used (some low-quality diapers can cause dermatitis and allergies in the baby, so you should approach the choice of appropriate hygiene products with maximum responsibility).

You should also pay attention to the amount of packaging. On average, newborns need 8-10 diapers per day. Thus, new parents need to purchase approximately 3 packs of 90 pieces per month. It is profitable to buy sanitary products in large batches, but you need to take into account that the child grows very quickly, and after a week or two it will be necessary to buy a diaper a size larger.
