In the MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV there was a glitch where a raptor monster got stuck in a place on the map and became invulnerable. Players simply proclaimed him god and worshiped the Velociraptor.
That was the immortal Velociraptor: It happened on the American server Excalibur. The area to the east of La Noscea, a low-level area, is usually quiet and peaceful. At least that was until the players discovered a monster trapped in a stone.
A level 32 Grass Raptor ran into a place on the map that it couldn’t get out of. At the same time, this flaw made him invulnerable. He did not suffer any damage from the attacks of the players who wanted to free him – he was immortal.
So the players did the only logical thing: they formed a religion, they began to idolize and celebrate the raptor. It makes sense, after all, he’s immortal and not even the toughest bosses in the game can say that about themselves. In practice, it looked like this:

Over time, news about the immortal raptor spread, reaching other servers and even other data centers. Players from all over came together to pay tribute to the great immortal raptor in Final Fantasy XIV.
Fellow players on the FFXIV subreddit also got the news of the new redeemer and the divine raptor received over 3,000 upvotes there (via Reddit). Reddit user hanyou007 wrote: “Long live the raptor Excalibur!” and I got 111 votes in favor.
Even the popular band from the game Moogle Troupe passed by. The Moogles host regular concerts on various servers, for which they use instruments from the MMORPG and play their tracks for the great raptor.

Here’s how the Velociraptor evolved: Over time, the great velociraptor has changed. Then two more raptors were added, turning it into a kind of hydra and in the end a swarm of bees got stuck in place. Together they made an immortal velociraptor hydra out of bees.
In the meantime, the issue with patch 5.5 server maintenance has been fixed. The immortal raptor has returned to his divine world and will watch over us from there.

Captured monsters are used for social events.
These monsters got caught too: Players on reddit also report their own crashes that occurred on their servers.
- For example, there was a “Sky Bear” in FFXIV during the Heavensward plugin. It was a bear opponent floating in the sky inside Dravanian (via reddit).
- The hunter monster Sabotender Bailerina got stuck in a path error and ran in circles on the Sargatanas server.
- There was also a raptor on the Cactuar server that the players had named Bruce.
Specifically, the only rock in the east of La Noscea where the divine raptor got stuck appears to be a very well known and very old monster trap. Bruce, the kidnapper, was reported five years ago. Players also reported from other servers that they had discovered monsters that had already been captured at the point.
But none of them were worshiped as the immortal velociraptor Exkalibur.

This is behind it: Game-breaking bugs and glitches are a rarity in FFXIV. Bugs as serious as the notorious Raubahn EX haven’t existed in the MMORPG for a while. The developers and the Q&A team are doing a great job.
But there are always minor bugs, like captured monsters, and the community uses them for their own amusement. Players take these glitches as an excuse to get together and make it a social event, where players from other servers also travel to play together.
Immortal Velociraptor Hydra with Bees was fixed with Update 5.5. But it will live forever in our memories. Like the Sky Bear.
