How do coordinates work in TOTK (Zelda Tears of the Kingdom)?

Any guide describing a location in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom must (or must) have coordinates. Fans may come across this strange sequence of numbers and think, “What am I reading?” However, don’t worry; coordinates are really easy to read once you understand what they represent.

Explanation of coordinates in TOTK (Zelda Tears of the Kingdom)

Whenever Link arrives at an area in Tears of the Kingdom, a set of coordinates will be displayed in the lower right corner of the screen.

When viewing the map, these coordinates will still be displayed. The numbers indicate Link’s location relative to the center of Hyrule.

Each set of coordinates shows three values showing where Link is located on the x-axis, y-axis, and z-axis in the world. Each axis displays the following values:

  • X axis: How far is Link to the left or right of the center of Hyrule.
  • Y-axis: How far is Link north or south of the center of Hyrule.
  • z-axis: how high or low the link is relative to the ground.

Sometimes players can find negative numbers in their coordinates. The numbers go negative as Link is to the left of central Hyrule, south of central Hyrule, or below ground level.

Based on testing, I’ve found that Link’s coordinates will show up no matter where the player scrolls the map. So, if I go to Gerudo City and open the map to look at Rito Village, the coordinates will still show the location of Gerudo City. Therefore, I cannot see the coordinates of a place just by looking at the map; The link must be physically there.
