Building

Funded primarily by a grant of 250 million dollars from the founder of Home Depot , Bernie Marcus , it was built on a plot of 8.1 hectares to the north of the Centennial Olympic Park in the city center. A Marcus celebrating his 60th birthday at the Aquarium Monterey Bay , California , in 1990 , felt the desire to build a big one in Atlanta.

Opening

The aquarium first opened its doors on 21 of November of 2005 for annual pass holders, and the second after the opening day to the public. The entry ticket is among the most expensive in the country, $ 22.75 per adult, despite being non-profit.

However, it soon exceeded its expectations, because on March 1 , 2006 it received one million, just 98 days after its inauguration. It has sold more than 290,000 passes annually in its first year, then discontinued its sale to prevent it from becoming a “private club.” It reached 3 million visitors on August 24 , 2006 .

Collection

The aquarium contains more than 100,000 animals, from 500 different species. Most of the specimens were transported from Taiwan to Atlanta by UPS , which is based in Atlanta, in 42 tanks in an MD-11. UPS donated the cost of the freight, estimated at more than $ 200,000.

Its residents include: whale shark , belugas , among other species. It is the first time that whale sharks live in an aquarium outside Asia , and they are in a tank with 23,500 m³ of water, that is, something like 70% of the total water in the aquarium tanks.

characteristics

The aquarium holds 10 million gallons of water (38,000 m3) of fresh and marine water. Its largest tank is the Shark Tank, which has 24 million liters (6.3 million gallons).

This aquarium received the two beluga whales, Nico and Gasper, who lived in the Chapultepec Fair from 199 8 to 2005 , in a pond located in the middle of the roller coaster.
