Writer, musician and co-lead vocalist for the Los Angeles punk band X, the group that released albums like Bajo el Gran Sol Negro. X may not be a well-known band today, but they are critical to understanding how punk came to be and evolved on the American West Coast. That should be enough for Exene Cervenka not to fall into oblivion, but it is also that he has had enough courage to leave the nostalgia behind and, like his partner in front of X John Doe, to cross the line that separates punk from country and American folk on records like “The Excitement of Maybe” (Bloodshot / Houston Party, 11) He met his future bandmate John Ducháč, who is known as John Doeon stage in a poetry workshop in Los Angeles.
