Definition and Scope of Sociology

Sociology can be said to be a relatively new science even though the development of sociology has been quite long. The term sociology was introduced by AUGUSTE COMTE a philosopher of France in 1839. AGUSTE sociology COMTE terms of the combination of two words that come from different languages, namely, Socius derived from the Latin meaning comrade , and LOGOS which is derived from the Greek word that mean word or speak . so sociology means talking about society.

After AGUSTE COMTE introduced the term sociology, there were also many opinions that defined sociology to provide a definition that could convey the overall meaning of the nature and nature of a word or times.

mat is difficult. because a definition of sociology is manifold, but basically each opinion accentuates all society from different angles both individually and in groups to better know what sociology actually is, we will provide some definitions (meaning limits) of sociology of various opinions:

  1. PETER L. BERGER argues, that sociology is a scientific study of the relationship between people and individuals.
  2. PITIRIM SOROKIN states that, sociology is a science that studies:
  3. the interrelationships and interrelationships between various kinds of social phenomena. for example, between the symptoms – economy with religion, family with morals, law and the economy of the movement of society with politics and so on.
  4. the reciprocal relationship and influence between social symptoms and non-social symptoms. For example geographic symptoms, biological symptoms, and so on.
  5. general characteristics of all types of social symptoms
  6. JAA VAN DORN and CJ LAMMERS argue that sociology is the science of stable social structures and processes.
  7. ROUCEK and WARREN are of the opinion that:

That sociology is the study of the relationship between humans in groups.

  1. SELO SOEMARDJAN and SOELAEMAN SOEMARDI stated:

That sociology or social science is the study of social structures and social processes, including social changes.

  1. Sociology as a Social Science

Sociology is a part of social science, because being a language is society. However, society that is discussed in other social sciences apart from sociology is in the special aspects of that society. For example, economics tries to solve problems that arise due to insufficient food supplies when compared to the population, besides it also discusses human efforts in an effort to increase production to meet the needs of the community and others. So economics only discusses the economic aspect, while sociology studies the elements of society as a whole. another example, political science also studies a special aspect, namely the life of society which concerns power.

From several examples of these comparisons, it can be reiterated that sociology is included in the scope of social sciences which discuss society from various aspects and different points of view. Likewise sociology which studies society as a whole and the relationships between individuals in that society.

  1. Sociology as a Science

To know for sure that sausage can be categorized as a science is not too difficult. This can be overcome by first together to find out what is meant by science.

PETER R. SEEN, formulates science as a system that produces truth and like other systems science has components that are related to one another. The main components of a scientific system are (1) problem formulation, (2) observation or description, (3) explanation, and (4) prediction and control.

Elements – elements ( elements) important part – the part that joined in a determination are:

  1. Knowledge ( knowlegde)
  2. Arranged systematically
  3. Use thinking
  4. Can be controlled critically by others and the public

Thus, it can be stated simply that knowledge includes:

  1. Knowledge ( knowlegde)
  2. Methods for acquiring knowledge
  3. Arranged systematically

The criteria for a science to be classified as a science must fulfill four characteristics, namely:

  1. Empirical
  2. It is theoretical
  3. Cumulative
  4. Non-ethical in nature
