Biography

Son of a famous couple from the American vaudeville, the drummer, Buddy Rich ( 1917 – 1987 ), at the age of four he was already participating in a Broadway musical . In 1928 he conducted his first orchestra and ten years later he made his debut as a drummer in the group of saxophonist and clarinetist, Joe Marsala . That same year he was hired by Bunny Berigan and in 1939 after a brief collaboration with Artie Shaw , he joined the Tommy Dorsey orchestra , in which he remained until 1942 when he switched to Benny Carter’s .

Trajectory

Buddy Rich began playing drums in the vaudeville world as “Traps, the Drum Wonder” when he was only 18 years old; He was completely self-taught and his initial training was carried out through his performances in vaudeville, alternating his facet as a musician with that of a dancer and singer.

In 1944 , after discharge from the Military Service, Buddy Rich rejoined the Tommy Dorsey orchestra , until in 1946 he formed his own orchestra. In 1953 , after he disbanded his group, he was hired by Harry James’s gang . In unison, the producer Norman Granz , called him from time to time to participate in his itinerant training the Jazz at the Philharmonic. Within the JATP, he had the opportunity to play alongside almost all the jazz greats in different and varied formats. Accompanied on drums Louis Armstrong , Dizzy Gillespie , Art Tatum with whom he recorded an extraordinary trio album in his exceptional series called “Art Tatum Group Masterpieces” Roy Eldridge , and Ella Fitzgerald , among other great artists.

A serious cardiac crisis forced him to be withdrawn from music for a long period of time, although the chopstick bug made him, disobeying the doctors’ advice, return to activity, forming, first a small combo and shortly after a ” All Stars “on a concert tour of the Far East. In 1961 , he returned to the Harry James Orchestra , with which he was until 1966when he decided to reactivate his own bigband. Despite the fact that rock and pop dominated the music scene in the world, he did not shy away and used a formula already used by Woody Herman, to create a band made up of musicians just out of the conservatory to become the alma mater of the herself, contributing her experience, her strength and her creativity on drums. Musicians such as Art Pepper , Steve Marcus , Mike Manieri , Danny Hayes and Pat La Barbera , among others, were among its ranks . Buddy Rich, possessed perfect technique, inexhaustible inventiveness, and endowed with physical resources that made it extremely difficult to beat him on drums, even though he musically faced drummers the size ofElvin Jones , Art Blakey , Gene Krupa or Max Roach . Buddy Rich, was without a doubt one of the few white jazz drummers, who had the virtue of possessing the “black sound and touch”.
