History

Sunscreen and sunscreen products are modern inventions. The tanning industry did not actually begin until World War II, when belligerent governments needed skin creams to protect their troops stationed in the Pacific and other places of extreme weather. Likewise, the practice of sunbathing until the body acquires a golden or tan tone is, for the most part, a modern phenomenon.

Throughout history, people from many different cultures took great precautions to avoid exposing the skin to the sun’s rays . Opaque creams and ointments, similar to modern zinc oxide, were used in various Western societies, as were umbrellas and parasols. Only those who worked in the field acquired a tan tone, while white skin was a sign of high rank.

In both Europe and America , two factors contributed to making tan popular. Until the 1920s, most of those who lived inland did not have access to beaches , but when railroads and cars allowed mass transportation to those places, bathing in the sea became a popular pastime. At that time, however, the dancers covered so much of the body that the tanning preparations would have been of no use. During the 1930s, as swimsuits increasingly exposed skin, tanning became fashionable, but tanning in turn introduced the risk of burns.

At first, manufacturers did not properly appreciate the potential market for sunscreen, or sunscreen. The prevailing attitude was that, after having sufficiently sunbathed, the bather placed himself under an umbrella or dressed again. However, soldiers who fought on land in Africa or in the Philippines, who worked on the decks of aircraft carriers or who, at any given time, could find themselves aboard a raft in the middle of the Pacific, could not enjoy the shadow at your craving. Consequently, in the early 1940s, the US government, along with others, began experimenting with sunscreen producers.

One of the most effective agents turned out to be the so-called red paraffin oil. It is an inert by-product of petroleum, the residue after the extraction of gasoline and other refined ones. Its natural red color, due to a pigment, closes the way to the ultraviolet rays of the sun. The United States Air Force distributed red paraffin oil among its airmen, in anticipation that they might be shot down in tropical territories.

One of the scientists who helped the military to get an effective sunscreen lotion was Dr. Benjamin Green, who was also convinced that there was a vast market, still virgin, for these tanning products. After the war, he used the technology he had helped develop to create a creamy, pure white lotion flavored with jasmine scent . The product allowed the user to achieve a copper coloration of their skin. Launched on the market, the Copertone helped spread the tanning trend throughout America .

Creation of the first bronzer

The story goes back to World War II . The sun was very strong for foreign soldiers who worked outdoors, for example on the decks of aircraft carriers, and it was necessary to sharpen the ingenuity to find a product that would protect them when there was no possibility of shade , or in case they fell in enemy territory and had to drift all day .

How to obtain this oil

From oil , once gasoline and other refined products have been separated.

The oil of paraffin was the first substitute bronzer that has given the history and the flame that lit the fuse, then years later Benjamin Green, one of those responsible for getting sunscreen for troops during the war thought the product It could have a commercial pull and created the first bronzer in history that he called COPPERTONE. Its creamy, white lotion flavored with jasmine and protective properties was a complete success.

In 1920, when fashion guru Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, creator of Chanel perfumes, accidentally tanned on a trip from Paris to Cannes aboard the Duke of West Minster’s yacht. Back then, where being pale was a symbol of distinction, appearing tanned in high society would have been a shame. However, only he knew how to turn the omelette and turn tan skin into fashion, so much so that the claim of the bronzer of the time, Coppertone said: Don’t be a paleface! Literally: Don’t be pale skin! As expected these began to be sold en masse and the benefits of tanning were extolled to the point of being considered even curative. Now sunbatheunprotected is considered to be a direct attack on one’s skin and health.

The bronzers

The risks of tanning booths, although known, do not prevent people from continuing to be exposed to UV rays from tanning booths, where no dosing is carried out.

Artificial UV rays reinforce the carcinogenic effect. The use of tanning booths is not recommended. In fact, it is prohibited in people under 18, a period when the skin is particularly fragile.

Several studies have highlighted the increased risk of skin cancer related to the use of tanning lamps.

How to tan

The tan makes the look change and a very uniform tone, because when you raise the tone you look healthier and more attractive.

There are thousands of methods to tan the skin, the most common is with the Sun. But it has been proven that it is not good for health to take it in excess because it is the cause of blemishes, wrinkles and severe burns in addition to other diseases of the skin. If you are going to sunbathe, the most important thing is that you use a sunscreen that protects very well. Even with the filter it will be possible to take color and there will be no risk of being red, but it will be a more natural color. It is advisable to moisturize the skin because it could peel and dry out. If you drink carrot juices before sunning the skin will take a more beautiful color.

There are also creams, sprays and places where they paint the skin to achieve a tan tone without having to expose themselves to the Sun.

Psychology of the sun and tanning

Tanning has many advantages, including the fact that it helps to hide skin imperfections, gives a slimmer look and offers a healthier look. When you see a person with a natural tan, you immediately think that they lead a relaxed life, spending time outdoors, possibly having recently been on vacation, away from social and work pressures. Seeing a tanned person takes the mind back to paradisiacal and exotic places. In addition, the sun influences nature and the organism, the mental and physical state.

People in countries with low sun and low sunlight are more prone to depression and suicide, engage in fewer social activities, and are more likely to suffer from jaundice, psoriasis, rickets, and other diseases.

Western cultures try to show tanned skin at any cost, although sometimes the cost is very high. In recent years, cases of skin cancer have grown significantly. For this reason, it is convenient to know the advantages and disadvantages of each way of tanning to get informed and not put the health of the skin at risk.

Importance of protection

The search for a quick tan can cause irreparable damage to the skin that is easy to prevent. A protective cream appropriate to the type of skin helps both tanning and avoid the harmful effects of the sun.

The arrival of heat generates changes that affect daily life in many aspects. Good weather comes accompanied by more sunlight, which makes life take longer on the street. The way of dressing also changes because the temperatures are higher and require lighter and more comfortable clothing, which is shorter, exposing parts of the body that were previously hidden by the cold.

At the same time, fashion imposes the need to be tanned, so part of the day is dedicated to sun exposure. Given these changes, the skin needs to be prepared and basic care to protect it from the effects of the sun. We must not forget that the sun is a source of health and life, but it is also the main cause of skin aging and the appearance of skin cancer, without taking proper precautions.

Most people confess to sunbathing without adequate protection for comfort reasons and because there is a belief that using a high sunscreen delays tanning. On the contrary, high protection does not stop tanning but allows safer sun exposure and it is recommended to repeat the application every hour and after each bath. In addition, there is no control over the time of exposure to the sun , and it is very important to take into account the place where the exposure occurs, the beach is not the same as the mountain, and the hours of the day because from 12 to 16 hours the sun is more damaging.

A skin, a protector

Each skin has its own characteristics, called a phototype, which allow it to tan quickly without suffering burns or, on the contrary, it is a skin that does suffer from burns and does little or no tanning. All skin types need a protector suitable to their characteristics because the most visible effect is the burn but there are other long-term effects such as skin cancer.

The effects of the radiation of the sun do not only affect the skin, also the hair, the eyes and the lips, they suffer the effects of exposure to the sun and for them there are specific products that protect and care for them, such as hair masks, hair bars lips and you have to be careful and protect your eyes with sunglasses that have sunscreens because ultraviolet rays can seriously damage them.

Sunscreens come in different cosmetic forms such as milks, oils or sprays, and what marks the effectiveness of the product is the protection index it has. This index is the one that will prevent the skin from being damaged by exposure to the sun, which is why our health depends on its choice and not because it is higher, it can lengthen the exposure time. The protection index should be adequate and use it more often if the sun exposure is prolonged.

Melanin is not enough

The skin has its own defense mechanism that activates when it receives sunlight. Contact with the sun’s rays triggers the creation of melanin by the body. Melanin is a pigment that has the function of protecting the skin and is directly responsible for tanning, but it is not enough for good protection and that is why you have to resort to sunscreen products, especially if it is a prolonged exposure.

The importance given to tanning in the summer time is such that most women wanted a quick tan to show off brunettes rather than protect their skin. The increase in skin problems among the population, especially the female population, has led to a greater awareness of the problems that the sun can cause and the search for the appropriate product that facilitates tanning and protection at the same time. To maintain healthy skin, it is also important that after sun exposure and with clean skin, an after sun is applied to hydrate and refresh it. In addition, its use will make the tan perfect for longer.

To consider

The choice of sunscreen depends on many aspects of the person such as age and skin type or phototype, but they are not the only ones. Keep in mind that sunbathing in the mountains is not the same as on the beach because this influences the strength of the sun that depends on the latitude, the altitude (the danger of burning increases with height), the season of year (there is more risk of burns in summer), the time (the worst time is between 12 and 16 hours) and the nature of the soil, the sand does not reflect the sun’s rays the same as snow.

When the weather is cloudy, protection is often neglected, but despite the feeling of freshness, the clouds let 90% of the UV radiation from the sun pass, so the danger of burns continues. Something similar happens when you use umbrellas or trees to avoid the sun and that is that it can damage the skin although there is no direct exposure. The rays of the sun

There are many types of rays that come from the sun although for some the atmosphere acts as a natural barrier. But others manage to cross it and among them are UVA and UVB rays that are those that damage the skin.

UVB rays are less numerous but more energetic, they act in the central hours of the day, between 12 and 4 pm and do not pass through the glass. These rays are responsible for burns and heat stroke.

In contrast, UVA rays are more numerous, less energetic, they act all day long, they do penetrate the glass and penetrate deep into the skin, causing premature aging and the appearance of skin blemishes.

These characteristics differentiate them but there is also something that makes them equal and that is that both cause the appearance of skin cancer in the long term, so a good choice of the sunscreen product to be used, avoids the harmful effects of the sun.
