BlackPlanet. It is an African-American ethnic social network whose main objective is to unite people of color by their cultural affinities. It is a network that is having great success in the United States and the United Kingdom , and various social and cultural initiatives have sprung up from its forums, such as musical concerts to help the most disadvantaged communities in certain areas.

History
It was launched on September 1, 2001 by Internet Analyst Omar Wasow , who in 2001 was running New York Online a pre-web community that started in 1993 from his living room in Brooklyn . It was the brainchild of Wasow and Community Connect CEO Benjamin Sun launched in 1999 , it came late with respect to social media sites, with three already in existence targeting people of color.

Wasow says that from time to time she gets questions about whether BlackPlanet is promoting racial separatism. “Voluntarily socializing with people who share your interests is what freedom is all about,” he says: ‘Anyone can join any of the sites. We realized that we were not segregating the web. However, niche community tools like BlackPlanet do host users who wish to promote separatism, like gangs, and this has not gone unnoticed. “Gangs have had an internet presence since their inception. This became apparent during the 1990s., when it became fashionable for gangs to use the free web space of Internet service providers to put up their own gangs website. “Finding gangs on GeoCities , and especially Myspace , along with other Internet Service Providers ( ISPs ), provided the foundation for what is now known as internet gang research, a specialized area of expertise in gang research gangs.

In January of 2007 , registration of membership in the home-page of BlackPlanet captured 15.8 million registered users since its inception in 1999. At the time of purchase , the site had about 20 million members and was the fourth most visited social networking site USA Target audience
