Apple iPhone 14,Review

Apple iPhone 14,Review.Apple held the usual end-of-summer keynote on September 7, which on this occasion featured the iPhone 14 family , but the second-generation AirPods Pro , the  Apple Watch Series 8  and the  Apple Watch Ultra were also presented .

The new generation of iPhone maintains four representatives ( iPhone 14 , iPhone 14 Plus , iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max ), but we no longer find the iPhone mini , a model with a 5.4-inch screen that has had too short a life for some users who did appreciate its more moderate size, although its lesser sales success has caused Apple to stop marketing it, so the iPhone 12 mini  and  iPhone 13 mini remain for history .

In “replacement” of the iPhone mini, Apple has opted for a radically different model in terms of size, since the iPhone 14 Plus (which by the way will not be on sale until October 7 ) has a 6.7 screen. inches, thus equaling, at least in terms of size, the iPhone 14 Pro Max .

The iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Plus share characteristics except for the screen format (6.1 inches for the first and 6.7 inches for the second), in the same way that it happens in the Pro range, since the iPhone 14 Pro It is identical to the iPhone 14 Pro Max except for the 6.1-inch screen of the first and the 6.7-inch screen of the Pro Max.

iPhone 14: same size and design as the iPhone 13

It is practically impossible to distinguish the iPhone 14 from the iPhone 13 with the naked eye, which does not happen with the iPhone 14 Pro Max and its previous version, since, as you can read in the analysis that we published a few days ago , it leaves the notch (space reserved for the camera integrated into the screen) to give way to the so-called Dynamic Island , but it also has an Always-On screen that, if we want, stays on, dimmed, almost all the time.

In the iPhone 14 we do not enjoy any of these new features (exclusive to the Pro family) and that is why it is very difficult to differentiate it from the iPhone 13. To begin with, they share dimensions (14.67 x 7.15 0.78 cm; the iPhone 13 is two millimeters thinner) and weight (172 grams compared to 173 grams for the iPhone 13). Regarding the colors, the blue, midnight, star white and (PRODUCT) Red of the iPhone 13 are maintained, which we must not forget is still being sold , and a new one is added, purple . The two that disappear from the previous version are pink and green.

In the images that accompany this analysis we have the iPhone 14 with the (PRODUCT) Red finish , an Apple initiative that we also find in the iPhone cases, the Apple Watch and its straps and spheres, as well as in the Beats Solo3 headphones. By purchasing (PRODUCT) Red products, Apple helps fund the World Forum’s AIDS and Covid-19 programs.

iPhone 14 is crafted from aerospace-grade aluminum and its front is protected with Ceramic Shield , making the display glass more drop-resistant, as well as a  reinforced back glass  thanks to a double-swap process. of ions. And as for its resistance to water and dust, Apple confirms that it supports up to 30 minutes under water at a depth of 6 meters, and of course it resists accidental spills of everyday liquids such as coffee, tea or a soft drink.

As a novelty in its design, but that we do not appreciate externally, Apple has modified its internal architecture to improve thermal dissipation , thus providing better sustained performance, ideal for high-computing workloads such as those required by some latest-generation games. . Also, in order to make it easier to repair, the rear glass is not fixed to the main housing, allowing easier access to internal components and savings on rear glass repairs.

120 Hz has not yet reached the iPhone 14 screen

The iPhone 14 screen is an excellent Super Retina XDR with OLED technology of 6.1 inches (15.4 cm) diagonal and resolution of 2,532 x 1,170 pixels at 460 ppi with a maximum brightness of 800 nits (typical) and an HDR peak brightness of 1,200 nits , contrast of 2,000,000:1 and Dolby Vision.

In addition, thanks to True Tone technology , it adjusts the white balance to adapt to the color temperature of the light around us, making images look more natural. By taking advantage of a second ambient light sensor located on the back of iPhone 14, the screen can more accurately adjust brightness when used against a bright background.

The main “but” of this screen is that Apple was expected to make the leap from 60 Hz to 120 Hz refresh rate that the Pro family already has from the previous generation. For this, it could have included ProMotion technology , which It provides an adaptive refresh rate from 10Hz to 120Hz, which means that it offers a higher frame rate when it is needed and saves power when it is not. Thus, scrolling and animations look smoother, but if there is no movement on the screen, it refreshes less frequently and consumes less power.

A15 Bionic processor with 5-core GPU

Last year, Apple decided that the entire iPhone 13 family would have the same chip, specifically the A15 Bionic, sharing 5 nanometer technology , 6-core CPU (2 high-performance and another 4 focused on efficiency) and the Neural Engine . with 16 cores capable of executing 15.8 trillion operations per second.

Although it looked like the same microprocessor, the difference in the A15 Bionic between the Pro and non-Pro models was that both the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini GPUs had 4 cores, but the Pro models added one more core to reach 5. Also, RAM was 4GB instead of 6GB on the Pro models.

On this occasion, Apple does not repeat the chip for its entire 14 family, since both the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max stand out with an Apple A16 Bionic chip manufactured in 4 nanometers, but this time the A15 Bionic of both the iPhone 14 Like the iPhone 14 Plus, it has a 5-core GPU that compared to the previous generation provides 18% higher performance that is noticeable in the quality of the graphics and the speed with which they are reproduced on the screen. In addition, the RAM of the 14 family is already 6 GB.

As in previous models, the perfect complement to the iPhone 14 Pro Max is a MagSafe case (there are different materials and colors from 59 euros to 69 euros) or a MagSafe wallet (like the one seen in the image above) for 69 additional euros.

Accident detection and Emergency SOS via satellite

These two features are in the entire iPhone 14 family. Although anyone would like not to have to use them, it is appreciated that in case of an accident they are available in the new iPhone.

Thanks to the  dual-core accelerometer  capable of detecting g-force measurements up to 256 g and the new  wide dynamic range gyroscope , iPhone 14 can identify a serious collision and automatically call the emergency services in case we are unconscious or not we have access to the iPhone.

Behind this feature of accident detection there is a lot of technology because in addition to the gyroscope and the accelerometer, Apple takes advantage of other components such as the barometer , which can detect pressure changes in the cabin, or the  GPS , which provides additional information when the speed varies, as well as the  microphone , which is capable of recognizing the loud noises typical of serious car accidents.

Apple has designed advanced motion algorithms that have been trained for more than a million hours in real driving situations, so crash recording data has improved accuracy. In addition, if we have an  Apple Watch , the emergency services call interface will appear on its screen  , since it is very likely that it is the device that we have closest; yes, the call is made through the iPhone if it is available to obtain the best possible connection.

As for  Emergency SOS via satellite , this feature takes advantage of the iPhone’s antennas to connect directly to a satellite and send messages to emergency services when there is no mobile data or WiFi coverage. Because the satellites are in motion and have low bandwidth, messages can take several minutes to arrive.

Emergency SOS via satellite takes advantage of every second that has elapsed since the accident and that is why the iPhone shows some  vital questions to assess the user’s situation  and also indicates where we should point the phone to connect to a satellite. Both the initial questionnaire and follow-up messages are sent to centers where specialists trained by Apple are responsible for calling the emergency services. In  this link our colleagues from MCPRO  explain in detail how this utility works.

A complementary benefit of this technology is that we can manually share our satellite location with the “Find” utility if there is no mobile data or WiFi connection. This way we will hike or camp safely in areas without coverage.

At the moment Apple has announced that Emergency SOS via satellite will be available in the United States and Canada from November and will be free for two years. It is expected that over the next year it will reach other countries, but there is no confirmation in this regard and it is also unknown what price it will have after the two free years.

Dual Camera with Photonic Engine

As we will see below, Apple has improved some aspects of the dual camera system of its iPhone 14, but the impression we have with this new generation is that there are more and more differences with the Pro models, of course in favor of the latter. Although Cupertino has never wanted to enter the “pixel war”, both the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max have a 48 Mpx main camera with a four-pixel sensor ( Quad Pixel ) with new features such as an additional 2x telephoto lens.

The iPhone 14 has a 12 Mpx main camera with a larger sensor, 1.9μm pixels and f/1.5 aperture (lets in up to 49% more light) that allows you to take higher quality photos and videos even in dark conditions. low light conditions. In addition, it has optical sensor-shift image stabilization.

Just like the iPhone 13 family from last year, the new generation keeps the Photo Styles . Thanks to them we can apply our personal preferences to any photo without giving up multi-frame image processing. We have five styles: Standard, Intense Warm, Bright, Warm and Cool.

The  Standard  is balanced and true to life; Warm Intense  makes shadows darker, colors more vivid and contrast more striking ; Glossy  provides vivid  and luminous colors; Warm  provides golden undertones for warmth, and  Cool  provides  blue undertones for a cooler look.
