Alano español: a very complete dog

The Alano Español is a dog typical of the Iberian Peninsula, like the Galgo , for example. But, unlike this one, it is perhaps less well known. Outside our country they know it as Spanish Bulldog and it has been associated since ancient times with the rural world, livestock and hunting, although in recent years, like other canine breeds, it has been included as a companion animal due to its qualities and its protective nature and lovely.

Physical characteristics of the Spanish Alano

The Alano is a large and strong dog with a robust constitution. Males can measure between 58 and 63 centimeters and usually weigh between 30 and 40 kilograms. Females are somewhat smaller, but not too small. Their height ranges between 55 and 60 centimeters and their weight is between 25 and 35 kilograms.

Perhaps what stands out the most about its appearance is its head, square, and its muzzle, short and wide. It has a thick tail at the beginning and a thin tail at the tip. As for its fur, it is short and of a brindle brown color, with black, reddish or gray tones; yet another characteristic of this breed.

Finally, it is necessary to highlight the ears, separated and large, so that they do not fold over the face, they tend to cut at the base when they are small. Thus, the appearance is usually that of rounded and pointed ears. But they are not always trimmed; That is why there are copies that have them folded and cover part of the face.

Character and care

As a characteristic bulldog, it is usually a good guardian and protective dog, although somewhat dominant. However, he can socialize and live perfectly with other dogs, he is noble, faithful and very intelligent, so training him is usually quite simple.

Well trained, it is a good family dog, as it is usually obedient and balanced. It also stands out for its playful and affectionate character with the little ones. And, far from what is believed, it is a very calm and quiet dog.

Regarding its care, the fact that it has short hair is an advantage, as it does not shed much hair, so brushing every five or six days is enough so that we do not find too many hairs at home.

Due to its nature, it is essential to take it out several times a day and take long walks. In order for the dog to be balanced, it is necessary that it be active and that some education and coexistence guidelines be clearly marked from the beginning.
