Step 1: Objective & Standards (The “Goal”)
Clearly state what the student will be able to do by the end of the lesson.

  • Learning Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify and explain the 5 essential things plants need to survive (sunlight, water, nutrients, air, and space) by creating a labeled diagram.

  • Key Vocabulary: Photosynthesis, Nutrients, Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, Roots, Survive.


Step 2: Hook & Introduction (The “Engage”)
Capture the students’ attention and activate their prior knowledge. (Time: 5 mins)

  • Activity: Show students a wilted, dying houseplant next to a healthy, vibrant one.

  • Ask: “What happened to this sad plant? Why does this one look so happy?”

  • Let students turn and talk to a partner for 1 minute. Write their guesses (water, sun, food) on the board.

  • Transition: “Today, we are going to become ‘Plant Doctors’ and learn the exact 5 prescriptions every plant needs to grow big and strong!”

Step 3: Direct Instruction (The “I Do”)
