The port cities in India are located along the seashores. The country’s major port cities provide ships and boats with seaports with storm and rough waters. Originally, the water front location of a city is called a port city. Ports are specifically designed to help in loading and unloading ships or ships. There are several major port cities in India, such as Alappuzha, Bharuch, Bhavnagar, Haldia, Kandla, Kochi, Lothal, Machilipatnam, Maikala, Mangalore, Mormugao, Nhawa Sheva, Panaji, Paradip, Porbandar, Ratnagiri, Surat, Veraval, Vijaydurg, Vikrampur .

Major port cities of India are mentioned below –

Allapuzha: It is one of the major port cities of the country. Located in Kerala, the city is a landmark between the Arabian Sea and a network of rivers, the lagoon flowing into it. As a result of its proximity to the sea, Alapuzha has developed into an important backwater tourist center. The city is washed by the sea waves of the Arabian Sea. History states that Allapuzha had trade relations with ancient Greece and Rome in the Middle Ages.

Bharuch: It is a large port city located in Bharuch district of Gujarat. Being situated on the banks of river Narmada, the place has always been prosperous. Although there is a shortage of water in Gujarat, there is plenty of water in Bharuch.

Bhavnagar: A port city of Gujarat, it is a place of commercial importance due to its proximity to the Gulf of Kambale and the Arabian Sea. This port city is an important center of the diamond cutting and polishing industry in the country.

Haldia: It is a port city in the state of West Bengal. The port city has attracted many factories, such as Mitsubishi Chemical Company, Haldia Petrochemicals, etc. Haldia Petrochemicals is the second largest project in India. The port city has several industries such as South Asian Petrochemicals Limited, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Exide, Shaw Wallace, Tata Chemicals, Petrochemical Complex and Hindustan Lever.

Kandla: Considered as the most prominent port in India, it is located in Kutch district of Gujarat. It aims to become number one in Asia in terms of traffic handling. The city plays an important role in the country’s international trade.

Kochi: It is considered the queen of the Arabian Sea and is located in Kerala. The city is one of the major ports in the country. Cochin Shipyard in Kochi is the largest shipyard in India. Cochin Fishing Port is the major fishing port in the state and supplies fish to local and national markets. It is one of the fastest growing second tier metro cities in the country.

Lothal: Lothal is an ancient city located approximately 82 kilometers from Ahmedabad which provides an insight into the oldest urban cultures and the largest civilization (Indus Valley Civilization) in the world. The city’s port was one of the most important ports in the subcontinent. Seals discovered on the site suggest that trade with Mesopotamia, Egypt and Persian civilizations may have taken place.

Machilipatnam: Machilipatnam is a port city located in Andhra Pradesh. The port is situated on the Coromandel coast of India. It is said that the thriving sea trade at Machilipatnam port was carried out. It was a 17th-century port for French, Dutch and British trade.

Mormugao: Apart from being a port city, it is a municipal council in the South Goa district in Goa. It is the main port of Goa. Mormugao is listed as one of the major ports in India. Mormugao records the highest ton of ore exported continuously, as it is the only port on the country’s western coastline. About 24 million tonnes of iron ore is exported through this port.

Mangalore: It is a major port city located in the state of Karnataka. It is situated on the west coast of the country. Mangalore’s economy dominates activities mainly related to ports and agro-processing.

Nhava Sheva: Also known as Jawaharlal Nehru Port, it is the largest port in the country and is situated on the west coast close to Mumbai. It handles about 50 percent of the country’s port traffic. The port has three terminals – JNPCT, NSICT and GTI (Gateway Terminal of India). Nhava Sheva is the country’s first privately managed container terminal. It is run by DP ports.

Panaji: Panaji or Panjim is a port city located in Goa. The port is one of the finest natural harbors in India. The city is located on the left bank of the Mandovi River. Panaji was an ordinary Konkani port surrounded by marshes and defended a hill fort in the past.

Paradip: Paradip is a primary port located in Orissa. Paradip is emerging as a major investment with several upcoming steel plants in India.

Porbandar: Located in Gujarat, it is an important weather port. Its deep sea port was built during the last quarter of the 20th century. The port’s name was derived from two words: “Porai” and “Monkey”. Porai is the name of a local goddess, and monkey means port or port.

Ratnagiri: Ratnagiri is an important port city located in Maharashtra. The port is situated to the south of Pawas Bay in Ratnagiri district. The northern and southern sides of the bay are rocky.

Surat: A port city of Gujarat, it is the second largest city in Gujarat and the ninth largest city in India. The port city is located at the heart of the country’s thriving diamond polishing industry. It is said that the city of Surat was born from this port.

Veraval: Veraval is a well-equipped port situated at a distance of about 6 kilometers from Somnath Temple, Gujarat. The most striking view of Veraval is the fishing port.

Vijayadurg: It is a popular seaport located about 485 km from Mumbai on the West Coast of the country.

Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam or Vizag is a port city of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is located on the eastern coast of India, opposite the Bay of Bengal. The port plays an important role as the midpoint distribution base of the southern, eastern, central and northern states of India.
