You could never help but listen to your favorite artist. However, over time, you have found that your PC’s audio volume is quite limited. You already know I have a solution for you, right?

Sound card control panel
The first method that I would like to recommend, which in my opinion always appears to be the fastest and safest, is to adjust the volume of your PC through the control panel of the sound card .
Depending on your PC manufacturer and the components that reside within it, you may find a Realtek , Intel , or other manufacturer’s audio management panel.
To use it immediately, whatever it is, first of all, all you have to do is reach the Windows Control Panel : to do this, click on the Start button (the flag icon located on the taskbar) type “panel Control ” in the menu that opens and click on the result indicated as Best Match .
In the new window, go to Hardware and Sound , scroll down the window and click on the control panel icon of your sound card (eg Realtek HD Audio Manager ). After that, look for the section related to Speakers and put the check mark in the direction of Volume equalization , to activate it.
Finally, click on the equalizer icon and bring all the sound indicators upwards, making sure not to bring them too high so as not to distort the sound quality.
If you notice that, in the Windows control panel, there is no section related to your sound card, all you have to do is install or update the drivers of the same by following, step by step, my article on how to update the drivers for free . When downloading the drivers from the Internet, you need to make sure that they also contain the control panel of your sound card.
If you are the owner of a Mac , however, “standard” in the operating system you will find only the classic volume control panel, which however does not allow you to go beyond the standard limits.
That said, go to System Preferences or Settings , clicking on the gray icon with gears located on the Dock bar or in the Launchpad , click on Sound and move the slider on the Output Volume adjustment bar to the far right , to turn up the computer volume to maximum.
Alternatively, you can also manage the volume by pressing on the multifunction icon (the levers) at the top right of the menu bar. More info here .
Equalizer APO (Windows)
If you are not satisfied with the result obtained from the control panel, you can take advantage of totally free third-party tools that could increase your degree of satisfaction.
One of these is Equalizer APO , a program available for all major Windows editions that allows you to equalize audio, apply filters and more using the PC processor as little as possible.
To start using it, you simply need to go to its official website and click on Download . Once the download is complete, open the executable file obtained, click on Yes , in the User Account Control window, then on Next , I Agree , Next again and on Install .
Before completing the installation process, the Configurator window will open where you will have to select, by placing a check mark, the Playback devices , i.e. the playback devices, and the Capture devices , i.e. the recording devices: after selecting them, click OK , select Reboot now and click Finish , to restart your PC and apply the new settings.
After restarting your PC, all you have to do is click on Start , type Configuration Editor and click on it to open the program. Thanks to the extremely simple interface, you have three ways to achieve your goal: directly use the preamp knob , load a configuration file or equalize the audio manually.
To increase the volume of your audio, for simplicity and effectiveness, I suggest you simply use the pre-amplification knob by going to the program’s home page and turning the knob located in the direction of Preamplification to the right . Alternatively, you can enter the desired number of dBs directly in the appropriate text box, under the heading Gain .
As I told you a few paragraphs ago, this program also allows you to add filters. To be able to add them, all you have to do is click on the + icon , in the center of the page, on the left, under the bar dedicated to the Graphic EQ .
At this point, a drop-down menu will open where, in addition to the Basic filters , Parametric filters and Advanced filters filter items , you can add channels from the Control section , add VST plugins from the Plugins section and more!
Boom 3D (macOS/Windows)
Are you using a Mac and looking for an application that allows you to amplify the volume of your multimedia station as much as possible? Then I would say that Boom 3D is the right program for you. It is also available for Windows, but let’s say it gives its best on the Apple platform.
Specifically, it is an Italian program to increase the volume of the PC which, through a software equalizer, is able to compensate for the lack of specific controls for the integrated speakers, also significantly improving the reproduction of sounds.
It also allows you to adjust the volume for individual applications in use. It is paid but can be downloaded and used for free for a 30-day trial period . Alternatively, it is included in the subscription to Setapp : a service that, for $ 9.99 / month ( $ 8.99 / month if you subscribe to the annual plan), allows you to access many paid applications for macOS without paying individual licenses (and also to some apps for iOS / iPadOS, with a small surcharge on the monthly fee). That said, to download the trial version of Boom 3D, connect to the program’s website and click on Try . Then open the .dmg package , start the Boom 3D installer by double clicking on it and press Open and Install . At this point, type in the password of your user account, click on OK and on Restart , twice, to restart the Mac and then be able to use the software.
After restarting, in the window that opens, click on Start application to start the program. Then, in the new window that opens, click on Ignore the introduction , then on OK (to give access to the microphone) and on Skip .
Now you can set the volume of the Mac, exceeding the maximum limit, using the adjustment bar at the top, choose the type of equalizer to use, selecting the one you prefer, clicking on Surround 3D , Ambience etc. and adjust the volume of the individual applications as you see fit by clicking on the icon with the audio wheel and the three dots , at the top right.
Further options relating to equalizers can be found in the drop-down menu in the Equalizers section , through which you can also make any custom configurations.
Once the main program window is closed, you can then access it “on the fly” using the appropriate icon that will be added to the Mac menu bar, in the upper right part of the screen.
VLC (Windows/macOS/Linux)
The last resort, obviously not least, that I suggest you consider is VLC . True, it is not a software specifically designed to increase the volume of the computer but a media player (also quite famous) free and usable on both Windows and Mac (as well as Linux).
However, if I chose to mention it in this article of mine, there is a reason: it allows you to play audio and video content and increase the volume up to 300%, thanks to the integrated controls and options available. Not bad, right?
To use it, therefore, for your purpose, first of all go to the program’s website and click on the Download VLC button to start downloading the software on your computer. Then install the program by launching the file obtained and following the simple instructions on the screen: if you have any doubts about it, read my guide on how to download VLC .
Once VLC has started, drag the audio or video file you want to play into it, then move the slider to adjust the volume (the one located in the lower right part of the player, corresponding to the speaker icon) to increase it more. By exceeding the indicator on the adjustment bar you will go around the limit imposed by the computer.
If you then want to increase the volume level even more, on Windows click on the Tools> Preferences menu (top) and, in the window that opens, select the item All , at the bottom left. Then expand the Interface menu on the left, then Main Interfaces and select Qt .
In the right part of the window, locate the item Maximum volume displayed , scrolling down the settings, and type, in the adjacent box, the maximum limit to which you want to bring the volume controller, bearing in mind that it is not possible to go beyond 300% , as I mentioned a few paragraphs ago.
Confirm the changes made by clicking on Save . close and reopen the program and re-adjust the volume of your audio or video file as I indicated earlier.
On macOS , on the other hand, go to the VLC menu > Preferences… (top left) and, in the window that opens, click on Show all , at the bottom left. Then expand the main interface menu , on the left, and select the macosx item from it. Now move the cursor, under the item Maximum volume displayed , to the right up to the allowed limit.
As anticipated, and as in the case of Windows, it is not possible to go beyond 300% . Then confirm the changes applied, by clicking on Save , to go, after closing and reopening the program, to further increase the volume in VLC as I indicated earlier.
Other programs to turn up the PC volume
If none of the previous solutions have satisfied you, I understand it, not all software is always able to satisfy everyone’s needs. For this reason, if you allow me, I would like to recommend some other software that I am sure will meet your expectations.
- GOM Player( Windows / macOS ) – media player similar to VLC which, among the many functions offered, also allows you to bring the volume of the content played beyond the maximum allowed.
- FxSound( Windows ) – if you want to increase both the volume and the sound quality of your PC, FxSound is a program to consider. It’s free.
- Sound Lock( Windows ) – if you want to decide, without limits, the audio limit to reach on your PC, Sound Lock can be a valid solution. This is a free software, compatible with Vista and later, which allows you to set a maximum free threshold per audio channel. In addition, if you like to watch horror movies or particularly animated films, it allows you to automatically adjust the volume during particularly noisy scenes.
