Biographical synthesis

He began writing poetry when he was a student at Horace Mann High School. He received his MD from the University of Pennsylvania. He worked as a doctor, in addition to writing drama and varied prose. He was a classmate of the poets Ezra Pound and Hilda Doolittle . He became a promoter of the literary use of colloquial speech. In 1909 he published his first collection of poems (Poems) and in 1913 Pound organized the publication in London of the second collection, The Tempers .

His influence as a poet slowly spread during the 1920s and 1930s. His work received increasing attention in the 1950s and 1960s. His major works include Kora in Hell (1920), Spring and All (1923), Brueghel’s Pictures and Other Poems (1962), the five-volume epic Paterson ( 1963, 1992), and the imagination (1970).
