When to do a car service

When to do a car service : information on periodic checks arranged in order not to lose the manufacturer’s warranty. Differences between service and car inspection.

The  cutting  is a periodic verification of car components. This check aims to safeguard the correct functioning and efficiency of the vehicle, postponing – as far as possible – the state of wear of the mechanical components.

Generally, the  first car service  must be performed after 15,000 or 30,000 km, but let’s see all the details of the case, without neglecting regulations, the manufacturer’s warranty and conditions in the event of a used car purchase.

Difference between revision and car service

In Italy,  car coupons  are NOT mandatory but are  essential  in order to benefit from the manufacturer’s commercial guarantee.

In other words, anyone who has purchased a vehicle and fails to submit it to the checks prescribed in the use and maintenance booklet ( coupons ) will have violated the terms and conditions in order to benefit  from the car manufacturer’s warranty  .

The  car review , however, is obligatory under Italian law. With the  overhaul , the car is subjected to checks aimed at verifying certain wear conditions of the vehicle. In particular, the  checks  carried out at the time of the  car inspection concern:

  • Polluting emissions (exhaust gas)
  • Noise emissions (noise)
  • Safety

The revision is said to be “ passed ” if the conditions comply with the standards prescribed by current legislation.

When to have the car checked? The first  inspection  is carried out after 4 years from the date of first registration of the vehicle. The second inspection is carried out when the vehicle is six years old.

The frequency of  car cutting  requires much shorter times and the checks are prescribed by the car manufacturers. Let’s see all the details.

There is also a clear difference between the  revision  costs and the service costs. The  overhaul  has a  fixed cost of  around 66.88 euros. The cost of the coupon varies according to the manufacturer, the type of checks and any repairs performed.

When to do the car service

The frequency and periodicity with which the vehicle has to be serviced  varies according to the type of vehicle and the manufacturer. Generally speaking, the fixed intervals for making the coupon are usually organized according to three different models:

  • There are cars that require a service every 15,000 – 20,000 km, if you do not reach 15,000 – 20,000 the service is done every 1 or 2 years.
  • There are cars that require an oil change every 15,000 km and cutting every 30,000.
  • There are cars with so-called longlife coupons, in this case the car coupon must be done every 30,000 / 50,000 km or 2 years.

How to know when to have your car serviced?
Just check the vehicle use and maintenance booklet.

On new cars, in general, the need for a service is indicated on the on-board computer. On the on-board display, when the mileage necessary to subject the vehicle to the service is reached, an orange warning light appears with the symbol of a wrench. Here, the time has come for the coupon!

Service on used car

If you bought a used car but still under warranty you should get the vehicle use and maintenance booklet from the old owner.

On the last pages of the maintenance booklet you will notice a table which must contain stamps made on different dates. Those stamps are placed at the end of each coupon.

If there are no stamps, invoices or receipts attached, the car has probably not undergone any service and you would do well to ask the old owner for an explanation.

If the old owner was just sloppy  (it can happen!) And did not have the control table stamped, you can also ask the dealer or garage where he performed the servicing and go personally to retrieve the stamps and not lose the guarantee.

When servicing the car, what checks are carried out

The  checks  to which the vehicle is subjected vary according to the kilometers traveled. Generally, the more the vehicle gets older, the more the cost increases and the controls become more complex. If at the first service you change the filters and restore some levels, it may be necessary to replace the timing belt or the brake pads in subsequent servicing.
