What to do immediately if you spill water or coffee on your laptop

Laptop or computer is often used by people. The vast majority of jobs involve working from such an electronic device. Mails, documents or other activities are carried out daily on the laptop, and meals and drinks are not excluded when we work. It can happen that we accidentally spill certain liquids on the laptop. What steps should we follow to avoid affecting these devices?

Tricks to help you save your laptop if you spill liquid on it

The type of liquid you pour on your laptop matters a lot. Water is not a major problem as long as it is removed in time. But the big problem with water is corrosion. If you spill coffee, alcoholic beverages or juices containing sugar, the situation is more complicated.

For this it is necessary to hold down the On/Off button for a few seconds. If the situation allows you, you can close the laptop in the conventional way. Even though it is possible that a short circuit has already occurred at the motherboard level. As we mentioned above, a visit to a specialist can help you recover your laptop.

Turn the laptop over with the keyboard facing down

In order to be able to save the laptop in time, it is advisable to turn it face down to prevent the liquid from entering the motherboard and draining out of it.

Wipe the affected surface

Make sure you remove all the liquid, especially from the keyboard, which should not be in contact with the liquid too much. It would be ideal to use an absorbent cloth.

Remove the battery from the laptop

If you have a laptop model with a removable battery, remove it immediately. Before that, make sure you wipe the liquid from your device. This is not possible on some laptops, including Macbooks, until you open the cover on the bottom of the laptop.

Let the laptop dry

After you have finished wiping all the liquid from the surface of the laptop, let it dry very well. Place the laptop on a dry towel that can absorb water. Put it in a dry and warm area.

Careful! Do not place the device on a radiator or next to an electronic object that emits heat (air conditioner, air heater, hair dryer, etc.). Lay the laptop open face down, similar to an open book. We recommend that you leave it for 24 to 48 hours to make sure it has dried completely.

Do not try to start it before it is thoroughly dry. If the laptop does not start after the two days in which you left it to dry or you notice that it has problems in operation, go to a specialist. It can save your laptop in time.
