What is Preventive Action?

Preventive action is a proactive action taken to prevent non-conformance with the plans established in an institution or organization or individually. Preventive action is also known as Preventive Action . This action usually always goes hand in hand with countermeasures or corrective actions or often also referred to as Corrective Action . Both of these actions play an important role in the execution to achieve the expected goals.

As we know, execution is often not easy because there are many factors that can derail the execution of a plan. Preventive actions and countermeasures are designed and prepared before problems occur so that goals can still be achieved even if they have to face various challenges.

What is Preventive Action?

Preventive action involves predicting problems that can arise and making plans to reduce them. It is often used to identify potential problems in a plan even before they arise in order to establish steps to prevent them. This identification process usually involves analysis, internal audit, review of customer feedback, and participation of employees and workers at all levels or all walks of life. Preventive actions include the stages of investigation, making an analysis review, taking action, reviewing the results, and taking further action if necessary. This action is in accordance with the Plan Do Check Act philosophy(PDCA) invented by Deming-Shewhart. PDCA is a dynamic cycle, where when a problem or deviation is found from the original plan, it will be followed up with corrective action (ACT) to return to the original plan track.

Preventive Action vs. Corrective Action

Preventive action is a proactive action taken to prevent and divert from the plans and goals that have been set. While countermeasures or corrective actions are actions or plans that are carried out after problems arise and interfere with the normal functioning of the organization or part of a related company department. Both actions can be applied simultaneously. Organizations or departments that are able to implement these two actions mean that they have better management and achievement of goals.

 

Difference Between Preventive Measures and Countermeasures

Because prevention and countermeasures are often applied in the same context, many also misinterpret and assume they are the same. Here are some facts that differentiate the two actions:

  2. Countermeasures or corrective actions take steps to correct the cause of the problem after the problem occurs.
  3. Countermeasures are taken after a problem occurs as a way to resolve the consequences and reduce the additional risk that comes with it.
  4. Countermeasures start from investigation, audit, and analysis of potential risks. The corrective action process begins with identifying the cause of a problem that has occurred.
  5. Countermeasures are reactive.

Countermeasures that have been planned and prepared before problems occur as an effort to minimize risk when problems arise, are often referred to as Contingency Plans .
