What is Immuni and how it works

The Immuni app is a very useful contact tracking tool that should help us avoid the spread of new infections of COVID-19 (coronavirus). Immuni is not one of a kind. In addition to Italy , other countries in the world have also developed apps of this type, such as StopCovid in France and NHS Covid-19 in Great Britain . The arrival of these apps has sparked great controversy, especially due to problems related to the tracking and protection of personal data. In this guide we will see what Immuni is and how it works , but also why this app is not safe and it is not a danger to users’ privacy .

What is contact tracking

The contact tracking is tracing of those affected by coronavirus and the ability to quickly alert users (potentially) have come in contact with those who tested positive. The goal is to be able to isolate anyone with symptoms of COVID-19 , inform users at risk and prevent new infections.

How the Immuni app works

Immuni is an app that could prove essential in the fight against the coronavirus. Once downloaded, Immuni offers welcome screens, which explain the general operation of the app. Subsequently, before accessing the actual app, the user must declare that they are over 14 and accept the terms of the privacy policy.

The functioning of immune is simple. The user will have to enter their province of residence and activate Bluetooth . The app will associate random codes with the user’s device, which contains no personal information and changes regularly every hour. When two users who have installed the app cross each other, they exchange codes throughBluetooth Low Energy . A user who tested positive will be able to upload random codes transmitted in the previous days to a server (with the help of a healthcare professional), so that these are made available to those who installed the app.

The shared codes will then be analyzed by Immuni and compared with those saved on the users’ device , in order to understand if you have come into contact with a positive user. If a match is found, Immuni will immediately warn the user at risk , indicating the steps to follow.

Immuni is safe for privacy

Despite the various controversies about the possible danger to user privacy, Immuni protects the privacy of users . In fact, the app does not collect personal data (name, surname, date of birth, address, telephone number or e-mail), but only the province of domicile . Furthermore, Immuni is not able to trace the identity of the user (or that of the people with whom it came into contact), it does not collect GPS data , it does not track movements and, finally, the data saved on the smartphone and connections. servers are encrypted . In addition, the data saved on the server are managed by public entities and controlled by the Ministry of Health. Finally, all saved data will be deleted if not needed (or no later than 31 December 2020).

Please note : all Immuni communications will be managed through the app. Any other method (calls, SMS, emails) is not about the app and could be a scam. In any case, you must never communicate your personal data.

How to download Immuni

Immuni is available for free both in the Android version , downloadable from Google Play , and in the iOS version , downloadable from the Apple App Store.
